Shared memory

A friend of mine would have me believe that a graphics induced memory access contention (on a shared memory asus laptop) can be minimized by reducing the amount of memory allocated to the graphics controller. However, I am of the opinion that, if anything, reducing the screen resolution and pixel depth is how the cpu memory access would be improved.
Are either of us on the right track?
Good to know that you guys do your computing sober..

Never mind. The system in question - a decapitated ASUS laptop - took offence at being puked on and gave up the ghost. It now exists only as a few valueable/removable parts.
