Haiku Code Drive 2008

The Haiku Community

The Haiku Code Drive is a program designed to raise funds from the community in order to sponsor students to produce code for Haiku. The Haiku Code Drive 2008 program specifically targets student candidates that applied for Haiku but could not make it into the Google Summer of Code. We will be offering them a U$2,500 stipend per successfully completed project.

Program overview

The Haiku Code Drive program was thought out on the basis of the two following premises:

  • Give the community an opportunity to make donations against tangible goals.
  • Allow the community to directly influence where the donated funds go.

This is how the Haiku Code Drive 2008 program is going to work:

  • We have come up with the following list of candidates and their projects from the students that could not make it into the GSoC and expressed their desire to participate.
  • We are asking the community to support the program by making donations to a common fund.
  • We will then hold an open poll so that the community can vote for the student/project they want the donated funds to go to.
  • How many and which of the students are sponsored is determined based on the total donations and the results of the poll.
  • The selected candidates work on their projects, and in the end each receives a US$2,500 stipend (a milestone-based mid-term 50% payment is being considered).

Tentative calendar

Here is a tentative calendar for the Haiku Code Drive 2008. We may adjust the dates as we go along if necessary.

  • May 15: list of candidates is published, and donation period starts.
  • May 22: Poll starts.
  • May 29: Poll ends.
  • May 30: Final results are announced.
  • June 1: Coding starts.
  • August 31: Coding ends.
  • September: Projects are evaluated by mentors/students.
  • October: Students who completed their project successfully are paid stipend and awarded other goodies.

How many students will be sponsored?

We don't know. We are making this program community-funded in principle, so it will depend on the generosity of everyone. The more the funds we can raise, the more students we will be able to sponsor, the more Haiku will potentially benefit. If by adding a small difference we can sponsor one more student, we may the tap into the existing Haiku Inc. funds.
