Haiku Recognition Award for Project Founder Michael Phipps

Farewell video for Michael PhippsFarewell video: YouTube | Download Project founder, long time leader and Haiku visionary Michael Phipps departed from the project last year. Michael's list of achievements is long: he did not just provide an overall vision for Haiku, but he also set up Haiku Inc., and over the years put in countless hours of work, keeping the development effort on track whenever it seemed to drift away from the goals, and single-handedly managing the infrastructure supporting the project. Without Michael, Haiku would most probably not be what it has become today.

Michael gave his goodbye in a moving letter to the Haiku community but, somehow, it feels as if we never reciprocated with a proper farewell. So we decided to do something special to show our heartfelt appreciation. We are thereby presenting Michael Phipps with the first ever Haiku Recognition Award. This is a very special award with a personal touch, as it has been signed by members of the community present at the recent BeGeistert 018 conference held in Düsseldorf, Germany, and is also accompanied by a farewell video.

For those of you in the community who were not present at BeGeistert to sign the award, you can still show your appreciation to Michael, and we encourage you to do so by leaving your name and a short message in the comments area of this post. We are sure Michael will be reading them all.

Thank you again Michael, and we all wish you the best of luck in your future pursuits. The award and video are on their way. ;)

What a great idea! I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Michael at the SCALE conference (was that just last year???) I wholeheartedly agree, Haiku would not be where it is today without his perseverance. Many thanks to those at BeGeistert who made this gesture. And if anyone is asking, might I humbly suggest Haiku 1.0 be code-named "Michael" instead of "Walter"?

Michael, i never meet you, i don't know you but i have a profound gratitude towards your works !
At the time, i never thought we'll had an opensourced BeOS. And today, it's getting closer to reality.
Thanks

I never met Michael either, but he had a great way of getting people to overcome their differences. He always took the time to listen and step in and explain instead of just taking someones side.

Great work, and good to see him rewarded.

Remember a leader is someone who you don't mind following, while a boss or superior is just someone who orders you around.

Good Luck Michael.

Michael, I met you at Watercon #1. I don't know if you remember me, but meeting you, it became clear that the success of the project is due to your clear thinking and vision. Thanks for all of your work and laying the foundation for the success of Haiku. It is the hardest part, and you succeeded!
I hope you continue to be part of the community and don't disappear!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Michael at the first WalterCon, back in 03'. He was my roommate for the conference. Since then, we've spoken occasionally on the phone, at WalterCon's, at conferences, etc. I will miss my 'roomie'.

It's amazing how far things have come since that first WalterCon. It's amazing how far Haiku has come since the first app_server prototypes that were released in 01 & 02. It's been a heck of a ride so far, and I'm thankful that Mr. Phipps was willing to take chances, stick his neck out, and held the reigns as long as he did. Any way you look at it, we wouldn't be where we are without Phipps. Thank you, Michael.

But all things come to an end. Roomie, don't forget about me. Thanks for all the encouragement, direction, and handling the menial administration tasks. This project wouldn't be here, in the state it's in, were it not for you.

Thanks, Michael, for laying the foundation to a continued BeOS experience. Setting the goals and sticking to them has brought us here. Where BeOS failed, Haiku will prevail. The project has grown too much for anything to be able to shut it down. Looks like you created a monster. :) I'd call that success!

I'm sure you'll use it soon. For the time being check this uber-weird video about Haiku OS out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgFDZTmeq9g

Can you say wtf?

Hat goes off to Michael. And I also appreciate a lot all your efforts to make such a promising OS. We will always be patient to wait the moment when it is born!

Hi Michael,

Thanks a lot for all your work on the project over the years. I recently read through some of the first messages on the old OpenBeOS list and it was clear that no-one really wanted to be project lead. It's a great job you were around and willing to put the work in for the sake of the project - I agree with the other posters that we wouldn't be where we are today without you.

I hope you can continue to follow Haiku from the sidelines without being burdened by the project leader role, and enjoy watching it getting closer and closer to release as much as we do.

Simon
