SOPA / PIPA information

News posted on Wed, 2012-01-18 15:39

Today the internet is taking a moment to protest the current US internet censorship bills.

SOPA and its brother PIPA are universally seen as limiting free speech on the internet. Many organizations including Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, and thousands of others are using today to better inform the public in a non-partisan way that these bills are bad for freedom on the internet at large.

You can find more information on SOPA, PIPA, and who you can contact to voice your opinion to at sopablackout.org

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

Thanks for taking the time to give more publicity to this topic. It is important and merits our attention.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

It's funny that this is mentioned on the front page here, considering haiku-os.org enforces censorship in the forums.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

I am surprised to to find this info at the front page.

We are used to get information about Haiku every 3 to 4 weeks...

but this one is not related to Haiku in every way, next information like this we will get next year?

Who is the author?

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

I didn't know that people not related to Haiku or haiku-os.org in any way could just put things on the front page like this. I don't know who the author is either.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

It was me (who posted the news article on SOPA), and it was because we had a SOPA black censored bar over the website logo on the 21st.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

Oh I see. I still find it strange though, since this site applies censorship in the forums.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

*shrug*

Trolling an open source project is a little pointless. If you want to carry weight in the Haiku community, start submitting patches and helping out.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

How am I trolling? I am pointing out what I think is a clear contradiction. I didn't say anything about your coding contributions, and if I had coding skills I would submit patches too.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

What contradiction ? The only form of censorship on this forum is the removal of those posts that have off-topic links to other websites, this is to remove spam.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

You also censor messages critical of Islam or Muslims for example. Remember the thread about Muslim hackers taking down Haikuware? I guess not. It probably doesn't count though since an important part of Haiku's base is in Germany, one of the most politically correct countries in the whole world.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

From your description, the post that was "censored" was off-topic and didn't belong in the forums.

If you did have a problem with a post someone marked as spam, post an email to the Haiku mailing list (haiku, or haiku-inc). Request it be investigated and provide detailed information of who did what to assist the community in validating it.

You will catch a lot more flys with honey rather then trolling the forums and comments with spiteful generalized accusations towards the project as a whole.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

This sounds like total BS. How should I know which individual did the censorship at that particular time? There was no notice about it or anything. Well, whatever. I'm not going to try and convince you further as that would likely lead to a ban. I wanted to point out the hypocrisy here, which I did. I'll leave it at that.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

Ha ha ha! "Censorship". Hilarious!

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

Huh?

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

I don't know exactly what SOPA & PIPA are. If I disagreed with it I could not vote anyway. I am outside the US. I guess it is related to entertainment copy right. If it has any similarity (analogue) to the copy right that was pushed (might have passed) in the Euro zone, it could be threatening. Their it would have been illegal to even have a software design that looked similar to an already copyrighted design but not copied. Designed with open source or even another paid software, company. Given that Haiku is at least partially reverse engineered, then it could break the new harsh laws in the Euro zone, if they got through. I don't know if they did.
Does SOPA & PIPA have any similarity to that in a entertainment sense? Also consider that Haiku is an media type OS.

Re: SOPA / PIPA information

ACTA is the European weighted censorship treaty :)
