First time trying out Haiku

Forum thread started by DiscipleOfDante on Fri, 2012-01-20 19:06

Okay I am really interested in Haiku. I have heard excellent things about this, even though it is still in alpha. I hoping to have a good experience with the live-cd and if I do I will probably go to using it instead of my current Linux distribution. I was hoping just for some strong points of the OS aside from what I have read in reviews and some useful links, tutorials, things like that.

I need some help on how to install the Qemu emulator, I am a beginner at this!

Forum thread started by jordanllgg50 on Sat, 2012-01-07 20:45

Hi there. I am having some trouble installing Qemu. I would really like to know on how to install this, so I can run this with another operating system. An example would be Windows 7. Like I totally do not understand on how to use this emulator, because I am really illiterate at all of this stuff. So please help me out here, and just let me know on how to install this Qemu emulator, with no problems. Then I will be much happier for sure. I already got it installed, but I have like no idea on what to do from this point on. Because like the whole installation is really complex and hard to set for me, really. So can you make it easier for me, and send me some screenshots on how to do this, also with an easy guide or tutorial?

Because then this will make the process much easier to understand. And then I will have this installation all set and completed that way. So this way, I won't be as frustrated setting up this emulator at all. Well anyway, so please get back to me as soon as possible on this. And explain on how to do this for me, the easy way step-by-step. Because I am just a beginner at this. So that's all I really want to know from you, right there. So just send me some screenshots, and also an easy tutorial on this, to make my life a lot easier. So that's all I want from you. So please get back to me soon on this issue. I would like this solved as soon as possible. So thank you very much!

AMD Bulldozer

Forum thread started by DFergATL on Mon, 2012-01-02 03:45

ok, so here is a question I have about AMD Bulldozer in general. I have heard (Tekzilla) and read (I can't remember where) that performance with Bulldozer was poor, overall. AMD came out defending Bulldozer saying that windows 7 was not yet optimized for their new design. Recently, I have heard, and read, that tests with recent builds of Win 8 would seem to hold this to be true as performance on the same hardware under Win 8 was better then under Win 7. I was just wanting to know what AMD did with this new design of theirs that would cause this?

Haiku way to do a document based file format

Forum thread started by kidd106 on Sat, 2011-12-10 03:43

I was comparing the file format of Open office writer and abiword. I made a simple text document document of each to compare. I know Abiword is lightweight, but surprisingly the output file of open office was slightly smaller.

If you look into the open office content file, you see that it lists all the paragraph types and then the document content. In abiword, it lists the paragraph types at the same time as the content, more like HTML.

As the Haiku community is all about efficiency, if the Haiku community created its own document editor, what would be the Haiku way to do a file format?

FA: BeBox dual 133MHz Computer System

Forum thread started by macsociety on Tue, 2011-10-25 00:16

Selling my BeBox and figured a Haiku owner may be interested. 8-)

BeBox are rare, only about 800 dual 133MHz models sold to my knowledge, so hardly ever come up for sale.

Here is the link.

Strange information on Wikipedia!

On October 6, 2011, several core developers left the project in protest over the project management style, leaving the future of the operating system uncertain.

Living inside VirtualBox

Forum thread started by ribbonz on Wed, 2011-09-14 21:55

interesting read here:
http://i5m.co.uk/code/2011/09/11/It-wasnt-meant-to-be-this-way.html

A guy who is not necessarily a big Windows fan discovers that he is using Windows every day of the week -- but it's not so bad because he's living inside VirtualBox (running Fedora 15).

Interesting how well virtualization can work these days. He even showed interest in Haiku, but it just wasn't usable enough. Haiku in VirtualBox is something of a pain w/o shared folders, etc. (my own observation). But the new guest additions should make this much more friendly.

Incidentally, the link at the bottom (about his notes on using VirtualBox) won't display properly in Web+ (sigh). Bezilla will display it correctly.
