An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

Blog post by RhapsodyGuru on Fri, 2010-11-05 02:32

Hello Haiku fans!

I am about to kick off a project that will benefit the Haiku community at large by addressing an area that I feel needs attention. Enter the Haiku video tutorial series. An easy to understand guide that will draw viewers into the beautiful Haiku while presenting all the features and work instructions in a plain and concise manner. Not only will these tutorials be designed to teach, they will also drive home a message which will prove that Haiku is the only OS designed from the ground up for use on the desktop PC. Whether you're a grandma just getting into computers or a tech genius who loves to hack around and write code, Haiku is designed for everyone from all walks of life. Hopefully the videos will inspire and help others to pick the OS up and become an adopter.

For those of you wondering about licensing, all of the content I create will be placed under Creative Commons for the sake of clinging to the spirit of open source. I am currently in the outlining and preparation phases for this task and will commence filming and capturing soon thereafter. If anyone has any suggestions, comments or questions they would like to press forward, please don't hesitate to drop a line here or on the Haiku mailing list. Thank you all for this great opportunity to work for the Haiku project.

Cheers,

Good. This is exactly what Haiku needs. A good video tutorial to help get new users to dive in to Haiku without getting hung up. Hope to see this real soon.

Nice...looking forward to it!

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

There exists http://haiku-screencasts.blogspot.com/ already.
Why kicking off a totaly new project when you could corporate ?

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

Because my tutorials are designed to be a self contained, all-in-one instruction package which will have a distinctive beginning, middle and an end. I want it so that any average Joe that has absolutely no idea what Haiku is can sit down, watch the videos and then actually feel like they understand what the OS is at the more fundamental level. What those screencasts are that you linked to are more interesting tidbits that the author will talk about, but not with any particular structure. I also intend to make my videos more in line with how the professionals do theirs, with some human element on the screen instead of just pure screen recordings. The purpose of my project isn't to emulate the hundreds of already preexisting screencasts, but to approach this issue at a more organized and clean fashion.

As some food for thought, why wouldn't the Haiku project not want to have a tutorial series that they can claim as their own?

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

I just don't get it why not working with the community here.
It would be much harder to do this completely alone without a community supporting it. Why having multiple approaches and not corporating to make the best out of it ?

But feel free to do whatever you want that are just my 2 cents.
I am excited to see your video tutorials and how they will differ from the already existing. (which btw. also have an distinctive beginning, middle and end and are also for haiku beginners)

This will be a perfect way to get new users.

Great that you can start your series as part of your studies!
I'd be happy to have a look at your works in progress or to give advice whenever you'd like to get some opinion. I'll look forward to updates to this blog and, as you've suggested on the mailing list, requests for comments from the community on the mailing list.

Regards,
Humdinger

Of course Humdinger! It will be a pleasure to share my work in progress with you. Also, in regards to the comment about having the community collaborate, I will be sharing milestones with everyone. I can assure you that all the Haiku fans will have their say in the development as well once things materialize a bit more. Stay tuned everyone. :)

Thank you for test Widelands!

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

It would be nice if you could include subtitle tracks for different languages, such as Chinese, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish... (Haiku translation teams may help you )

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

That is just ... excellent! Hmm, let's think now, any better words to say than that?

Re: An Epic Haiku Tutorial Video Series Is Now In The Making!

it's good to see free software and creative commons used at the same time, that doesn't happen nearly enough. which cc license were you planning to use? will it allow remixes?
