BeOS related books - developers book too

Forum thread started by Visi on Wed, 2006-02-08 10:06

Hello,

I think it worth a new topic stating what BeOS books are available and how usefull are they. I know that in the Haiku website one can find in the DEVELOP/RESOURCES http://haiku-os.org/develop.php section a lot of usefull information and some books on-line version. So for example : if anybody wanted to buy the "Programming the Be Operatin System" book here also can find a free full version. I think it is a good start to anyone who would like to write an application to Haiku/BeOS.

So if you have anything to report regarding an older BeOS related book or if there will be something new regarding Haiku I think this topic will be a good place to report and talk about.

I would also have a question to those people who have the original "Be Developer's Guide" and/or "Be Advanced Topics" books. How usefull nowdays these books. Is the "Be Book" covers everything from these older book or do they contains still useable things? Are they for beginners or for "real programmers"? I am considering to buying them but if they are not anymore relevant to BeOS 5 then I will try to manage with the Be Book. Thank you for your comments.

A couple of the books are now online for free:

Here's a page I made years ago, pointing to some BeOS related books on amazon, you can find good deals on used copies, that's what I did.

The "Porting UNIX apps" book is outdated but still a good resource to have when attempting to port code from Linux/Unix/BSD to BeOS.
The Programming the Be Operating system book is also outdated but a good place to start for learning to program in BeOS. It assumes basic C++ skills.

Also here's a link to a ton of free online computer books:
