Design team? So let's get talking about Haiku's look!

Let's look at the beOS style...

look at the way the beos traveled from DRx to R5:
What can we see? the look start from a simple 2D style to a very more worked nice little 3D one. from nice to nicer, wright ?
Now let's speak about the Zeta/Dano style ?
I think something is broken, it isn't ?

At this time, my personal opinion is:
WE MUST SAY NO TO THIS !
two way for this :
Keep all the R5 gui style, (haiku default )
Or at least, a totaly skined gui with built-in Original beos skin.

It's time to ask you this question:
Do you want beos looks like this or that?

cool

This is much better than dano style : thanks to you !
but with some improvements

Say that BeOS is ugly and you'll get killed. BeOS is NOT ugly. MacOS X is disgusting though - horribly over busy, way too over designed.

OSX is a piece of crap graphically.

Max OS X isn't ugly it looks better than any other OS.

These are completely 100% opinions... they shouldn't be stated as facts.

It's all subjective. I too hate the Mac OS X look - and I always switch a Windows XP gui back to "Classic" mode whenever I use it.. I like it simple and usable... all that other stuff sucks up memory and CPU cycles (this is factual) while making the OS look like a toy (in my opinion).

(I did the bold thing there in that quote)

I couldn't agree more... hate the XP style, it's a waste of resources. The trash icon in beosfrance's mockups are the same I have in Fedora Core 2 and the same trash can icon I'm using in Win2K :P

(Just remember - keep it simple, and vectorbased icons, please - NO bitmaps whatsoever  )

What are you picking out ProcessController for (in the Deskbar)? Its been around for years, its not like we'll have to develop it....

a bit too round ? The round is done on 3 pixels, like the other side ....

I'm not a big fan of them either - some of the white "z-snake" on the menu looks really odd to my eyes.

You guys realise that R1 isn't going to be skinnable? The current admin team position is that the look will be just like R5 - from the disagreements in this thread that is beginning to look like a sensible idea.

Jøjks.. I really hope Haiku is NOT going to look like this. It's way to flat and cartoonish and windoze3.1-like... The only thing I like is the blue, yellow and red borders for non-, semi- and threatening information though green instead of blue might be better (like trafficlights). But then.. the yellow color perhaps shouldn't be used since yellow is the basic color in Beos.. (just my personal opinion :P )

Mmm those scrrenshot program edges and dialogue pics look a bit pixualated like xp's themes.

I have followed this thred for a while now.
Haiku are a R5 replecment minus some bugs?

1. We can't probably unite with one desktop?
2. every BeOS user thinks that the plane R5 desktop is not as bad as it could be use as a standard one.. right?
3. So the best way would be to have a good "theam" app so if you don't like the R5 look a like you can choose a different one.. or make your one.
4.there must be a way to disable this app or this app just changes som settings.. speead is most important to me :)

hey i don't get it! where's the usability on those screenshots? those lil icons u need to click to minimize? window topbars so short? u'd need to be a great shooter to catch them... make it as cool as mac os x is.

Since there is a vast array of opinions, why not include several options for GUI appearance, including:

1. R5 with slight modding/tweaking. Maybe some aspects featuring transparency. Nothing *too* radical
2. Dano/Zeta look
3. A barebones graphical console that maximizes system resources
4. Other?

Maybe a little something for everyone without trying to mimic WinXP?

Not them, please. If you want a full-screen console, go get linux. If you want WinXP, use WinXP. I really don't want to see Haiku trying to copy other OSes - we will be different, we shouldn't try to dress up like everyone else.

Be not worse than GTK+, Qt-based KDE/GNOME and other wm. This is main requirement... please

I only mentioned a barebones graphical console for the sake of users who are stingy with their system resources. Of course with RAM prices so low nowadays, this really isn't much of an issue unless you do a lot of simultaneous memory-hungry tasks at once. Call me a sentimentalist, but I find resource frugal GUIs like IceWM a nice change of pace every once in a while when a "prettier" GUI seems to slow things down.

I am *not* saying that Haiku should look like IceWM or Enlightenment or anything else. I am also *not* saying Haiku should look like WinXP (That would be the last thing this former WinXP user would want :!: ) What I am saying, is that Haiku ought to have its own look(s) that rather than intimidate those accustomed to Windows 9x,NT/XP, OSX, etc, cause them to think "Haiku looks like its as easy to use as my __________(PC/Mac/whatever). Maybe I will get a copy and spend an afternoon with it and see how it works.

Now as for how that best should be accomplished, I'll be more than content with what other people decide. I don't care so much about how it looks as I do how well it works.

Hi all!
I'm glad to see a so vital community discussing the very important issue that GUI represents... it is the very first impact and way of contact between the OS and the user, and I mean it has to communicate something... for the Haiku R1 I've got you are willing to mantain the "old" BeOS R5 look... but when it comes to the R2 GUI... I'd like to see something smooth and glassy... something comfortable and very interactive... what about something like the "Project looking glass" from Sun?! (But not that heavy... simplicity and elegance before everything!)... I'd like something like the leaf of the mainpage logo, falling down from the tree to the water in an autumnal park... with soft, light windows... and a light 3d and/or light animated effect... maybe a new management of the minimized windows with a small preview on the corner... and an important, welcoming, launcher/dock/sidebar whatever the name is...
