From what I've been able to tell, the geekgadgets gcc 2.9-beos-000224 is
later (better) than the R5 version 2.9-beos-991026. However, I haven't
been able to find any place to download it from. It doesn't seem like
the geekgadgets site exists. The name isn't even found.

Any ideas?

The "this compiler is better than that compiler" topic is being thrashed around pretty heavily on the Haiku mailing list. Find the archives here http://www.freelists.org/archives/openbeos/

Particularly check out this message from Oliver Tappe http://www.freelists.org/archives/openbeos/10-2004/msg00023.html

The list consensus is that his compiler is the way to go.
