I am pretty good at this kind of stuff, I would like to think I can code, but I know better. I would like to contribute if I can. I love BeOS and would like to contribute to this is at all possible.
Me too :D But I'd like to do the sound design like startup, shutdown, empty trash sounds. Let me know if there's a need for such a person and I'll be ready to help! I also love the BeOS and would be honoured to contribute!

That's possible, but like Derek said, it's good to discuss and organize first. Although Haiku's image / strategy is pretty obvious: clean, simple, fast, efficient, can get complex things done with not much effort from the end user. So those sounds have to fit that image and feel like they are a part of the OS.
Just some thoughts.....
On a side note: anyone knows what they'll be doing with the icons? I mean. they're surely copywrighted and owned by Palm right?
ps: ignore the bottom image that was just a skyOs mockup i did
I like those icons. What are you using to create them and can you give a quick tutorial on how you did taht. I don't need anything to complex just enough to get rolling.
I would like to do some stuff using the MacOSX type of work, but at the same time don't want it to look to much like Mac either. I ihave been tinkering, but have yet been able to crank out an entire set..
Meybe we should come up with a list of applications that will need icons?
Also is there going to be a theme manager in Haiku?
basic icons would probably be - simple text file, c/c++/header files (development icons?) GCC icons, generic binary icon, unkown filetype icon, scripts, device types ...most files residing on the system for now will probably be those type.
Also I personally prefer the more smooth clean 3d look of OSX over the stylized look of XP. Also how will the windowing system work - what bpp should icons be in - what sizes ...64 32 and 16? Anyways I'm sure they have some people already working on somethings maybe close to this - would be nice to get some input from them.
Note that icons loading may be handled by some OS functions, but they are mostly displayed by the Tracker. So it depends on what OpenTracker variation you follow. In OpenTracker the icons are 16x16 and 32x32 with 8 bits. In the SVG-Tracker they can also be 48x48, 64x64 or 128x128 in 32 bits. In the Tracker.NewFS you can have icons up to 512x512 in 32 bits. For the latter two the best would of course be SVG-Icons that can be rendered in any resolution.
Btw, we're working on gettin out some vector-based versions of our logos, etc for you guys, just some legal issues to work through with the artist, etc.
Youlle, your icons are nice. But they don't seem entirely suitable for Haiku since they don't use the trademark isometric perspective that has always distinguished BeOS icons from all others. I consider the isometric icons to be as significant a "branding" element as the yellow title bar tabs.
Would you be interested in producing a new set of icons very much like the ones you've submitted to SkyOS, but reworked in the isometric perspective? It would be as if the same small "objects" were photographed from a different angle...
maybe not exactly what haiku would use as ppl wud like the isometric beOS style icons but okay i've added a word processor icon, a setup icon and a USB icon to the skykons set i posted
OK, this is going to sound insane, but all those icons are *too smooth* part of the charm of the BeOS icons was that they were somewhat blocky, and thats why SVG at 32x32 looks totally out of place - overly smooth
I vote that Haiku (or OpenTracker, as it is that which does the icons) sticks with bitmapped icons. Please!!
Your icons look good for a SkyOS/linux machine, but I agree with the other posters who say they don't really feel like BeOS icons. Also the obsession with file extensions doesn't really work on BeOS, as it doesn't even require extensions but uses mime types. Users don't necessarily know that a picture of a white thing with "JPG" on it means it's a picture. Linux users do, but hopefully we are targetting more beginner computer users. I fear a lot of icons look too similar, especially at 16x16, and the indentifying text is difficult to read at that size.
I agree with MYOB, that small 16x16 icons should put clarity ahead of smoothness (any kind of antialiasing on such tiny icons makes them harder to interpret IMHO). However, BeOS-style icons can also look cool bigger with gradients and antialiasing.
Check out http://si-msn.port5.com/QuickTrack.png - an early screenshot of a thumbnail browser I was writing - basically i blew up the BeOS icons to 96x96 and then traced over them in ArtPaint, adding gradients and stuff along the way.
I'm not an artist by any means, but I understand how hard it is to create icons that are easily identifiable and look good across a very wide range of sizes. SVG is not necessarily the answer - it tend to create icons that look good from "big" (48x48ish) up to "stupidly large for any useful file management" (256x256 or even bigger), but for smaller sizes they are not usually very clear. and hand-drawn bitmaps are the best.
i only posted the updated icons as david asked me to post them, and your right they dont fit beOS as they, are and they're not SVG they're just a 256x256png that i made that has been converted into a alpha-blended ICO file by Aliaxis IconWorkshop
I agree that the Haiku icons have to be very simple (not too much gradient, shiny stuff). My hopes are very high for Haiku, but one of my fears is the GUI. This is something in the OSS world that's plain terrible! Look at Linux... all the inconsistent icons and such, horrible! I think only 1 or 2 talented guys have to do the icons so there will be 1 icon style throughout the entire OS.
Czeslaw, I think it's a good thing I'm not alone on this :D But judging by the looks of the website I think they have a clear idea of what the average BeOS user would like to see. Let's hope Haiku R1 will also have this clean professional look!
But judging by the looks of the website I think they have a clear idea of what the average BeOS user would like to see. Let's hope Haiku R1 will also have this clean professional look!
I'm confident that the GUI will also have that look, that is to say, something similarly clean and professional. Every "leaked" sketch I've seen from the design team lead has been absolutely beautiful. I hope that the artists conversing in this thread are able to work closely with the design team lead so that the outcome of their efforts can become part of the "official" default UI, if that is what the artists would like to achieve.
Btw, what i have seen is, like others have said, too smoothy for me. The choise of SVG or bitmap for icons has to be taken soon, for all us making differents sets for users to choose. SVG would be good cause then, we could easily use OS X icons, bitmap with a good support of transparency (like with PNG) is enough. Nobody sets icon size at more than 48 or 64. So, a PNG file in 128x128 would be far enough, but SVG is going to be universel. So it's more an optimised choise more than an esthetic choise to me. What is the lighter and will make things the quickliest ???
About the sounds i have heard .... eh man, just install them on you system and you will see what i mean ;) Specially for the error one.
Haiku sounds to me poetic ... and should be very easy, simple and clear to use, so that's what i would like to hear when using it. I have some sounds i am using for now 2 months, i will put links for you to hear tomorrow and tell me what you think about them.
I'm actually in korea, perhaps it influence me a bit ... but the name haiku fets great with those sound i think. With this picture i have take in scotland's highlands, you are already in holiday :)

Lets be careful not to make some type of cliche Japanese amusment park here, you know what I mean? Although I do think Japanese instruments could be quite interesting.
Has anyone heard of an artist named Tony Scott? He has an album called "Music for Zen Meditation," maybe some positive inspiratin could be drawn from that? I would hate to play devil's advocate here, but I think if you search well enough you might be able to find a few songs on any number of the P2P filesharing networks from that album. Heres a track listing:
Tony Scott: Music For Zen Meditation And Other Joys
Tony Scott(clarinet), Schinichi yuize(koto), Hozan yamamoto(shakuhachi)
1. Is Not All One? 3.11

7. Prajna-paramita-Hridaya Sutra (Sutra Chant) 7.09
8. San-Zen (Moment of Truth) 6.44
9. Satori (Enlightenment) 5.22
btw, just a side note about that album, its totaly improv! Niether of the three artists rehearsed or composed anything prior to the recording of the album. It set a deep appreciation in me for the skills of those artists.

Not bad. here's one I took when I went for a cycle:
In regards to MYOB's post:
I DO NOT believe the objective here should be to recreate the charm of the blocky BeOS icons. The goal is the longterm survival of a great OS. This will require a more modern and "smoother" GUI interface. Afterall, I remember the charm of playing the blocky graphics on the Atari 2600,

At the same time it should not be so smooth that it looks completely like a cartoon. It appears that the gradients can be done to the point where it looks that way.
In regards to RikkiRockett post:
As for wanting to retain the original beos look and feel, it depends on what you mean. I believe the isometric look can and should be retained.

I m'with you for that !
