My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
... Hi everybody!
At first - excuse me for a bad english. So... what's all about - just a try to make a skin for Haiku, enough usable at a low screen resolution. It's not a secret, that not everybody uses giant monitors with 1600x1200
That's why i've tried to make a skin with look-and-feel of original BeOS. Of course, it's not 100% original, but I wanted to compile many ideas together (maybe someone'll find similarity with classic MacOS in headers)...
It looks great on LCD or at well-focused CRT with a matrox/3dlabs (wich have a good RAMDAC) even on a high resolution. But on a some old monitors this image may look blurry'cos it contains some pixel-sized details and it requires a sharp monitor.
Whatever, it's just a first version... i'll try to improve it and draw menus/radiobuttons and so on...
Please, keep in mind that I'm not a programmer 8)
But I'm drawing gui elements, icons and buttons for windows applications...

Stubear - alas - seems to be no more. Certainly his site no longer exists. I've upped the pictures of his that I've got here:
http://www.k23productions.com/haiku/rc/stubear/
In case I came across wrong - I wasn't implying you'd plagarised StuBear; I was just pleased to see his style continued! :D

I'm a big fan of Stubear's mockups. Don't think his and haplishe's have that much in common - but haplishe's have grown on me a little too.
And he never had a site himself...beandigo hosted the images for him. I mailed him last year sometime about his concepts, and I did get a reply, so he was still involved a little back then.

Whoa, Stubear's designs are great as well! How much freedom will Haiku users have in changing "skins"?

Stubear's site is at:

Not much, certainly for R1. You'll be able to choose window borders/tab styles, but that will probably be about it.

I'm no more? That's news to me. I'll have to look into this matter a little more I think ;)

2 Stubear: Good work. I don't understand where this strange opinion (that our work is quite similar) grows from. I don' think that our drawings looks similar. And welcome back to life

I think you should create something such good as MacOSX theme... Something ruling
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
For that, i would be very happy yo know first what the OS will support:
- Window shadows
- Window distorsion (like in OSX when you minimise an app to the dock)
- Transparency
- Round corner
- Tab move (if we still want to use tab)
- Number of buttons supported by the mouse (exposé is far better when set on a fourth button on the mouse)
- ...
So first, i need a list of supported/unsupported features
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
yup, the dock will be great. the option which allow you to set the % of transparency in menus will be ok too.
ps. nice deskbar: http://www.k23productions.com/haiku/rc/stubear/OBOS_UI_v2_2_1_a.gif
i hope in haiku i can switch between haplishe's and stubear's look :-)
I've beta-version of it, materialized!
... I've window decor for Dano, based on my skin. It's still far from brilliant (keep in mind, that is't beta-version) and needs to be polished, but tabs already looks quite similar to my ones, active window have yellow border and so on... that's why I don' want to share it with everyone 'till it'll be completed. (Please, don't ask me for it this time). But remember - the work is in progress!!... wait for news!
Re: I've beta-version of it, materialized!
We will be here waiting! :D
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
yes, you can send it to me :) i'm waiting ! when it's ready, msg me on icq.
Re: I've beta-version of it, materialized!
We working with it (c) ;) While this the alpha, Beta now in progress.
to the members of Creative Design Team:
Keep the good work! People need a high-quality design, clever usability, cleanness of lines and comfortable interface. In fact this the soul of the system ;).
I hope that will this all be in Haiku.
But i know,
You will do it.
You already do it.

Re: I've beta-version of it, materialized!
Respect to DioGen and the team!
Beta-version is ready!
Hi!.. I've Got Something to show You!
1) Due to a lack of hosting, where images were located, I moved them to a new location to don't let them disappear.
2) Beo creates beta-version of decor, based on my sketches! It is as close as possible to my drawings. Great work!.. I've tested it under Dano and everything looks OK. All of the bugs from alpha-version is fixed. Brilliant!!! Feel free to download it from here: http://march2005.dirty.ru/haplios.zip
3) This thing was made at 22 of december of 2004 but never been presented before today. It's a patch for app-server, which changes original cursor to "mickeymouse hand". Works perfect under Dano. No bugs detected. Thank You, 3DEyes! Download link: http://march2005.dirty.ru/haplios_cursor.zip
... if You'll install both packages - You'll get Your OS looks like on the sketches from this thread!
Please, Test it on the other BeOS versions!
PS. Skin itself 8)
Re: Beta-version is ready!
:D that looks nice! congrats, nice crisp fonts, too. I like it.
Re: Beta-version is ready!
I need a BeOS that looks like that. :x

I like the job you're making... but what about a more modern look? Something like "Project looking glass" from Sun (or Orchestra from Symphony OS)? ...More light, and elegant of course... I'd like a smooth, glassy windows style... a comfortable, welcoming, soft taskbar/docker/launcher whatever it is called exactly... and a new management system for minimized windows... something with a little preview, maybe at the corners of desktop...
...with a light 3d/animated rendering of the leaf of the mainpage logo falling down from the tree to the water in an autumnal park... hmmm :P
... About Plans
... More modern look requires more modern appserver and so on. My main goal is to create skin, that are possible to implement on a current BeOS'es (including Haiku). When we'll get working Haiku then we'll think 'bout absolutely new look. But not now. That's why this skin looks as a pixel-art 8)
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
Pixel-art?!
You're underestimating your job! I like it! ...I was only eager to start talking about the future with someone informed... and I wasn't aware that the actual API is incompatible with what I've proposed... Now I get it... first developer had to rethink the GUI rendering and windows manager, etc. ...and then I will have the chance to discuss my ideas...
Thank you for your answer and your courtesy!
Bye
Marco.

... Please, keep in mind, that I'm not a developer from Haiku Team. I've asks 'bout creative design team on this forum before, but no-one answers me... nothing concrete! I'm just tryin' to create BeOS skin, I like. Some good people make it possible to use it under Dano. But, now I know, that we will not see it under Haiku. Firstly, because Haiku is far from completion (and the possibility of changing skins - too). Secondly, Haiku developers was never interested in using this. I'm afraid - They never visit this section of forum (please, do not think, that I'm 100% sure they'll like my sketches) :D
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
When Haiku is skinnable (if Haiku is ever skinnable!) I'm sure someone will make a version of your theme for Haiku, Haplishe.
markomanka, I think you've got it the wrong way round - first how we want Haiku (R2) to look *should* be discussed, and then the developers can write an API that allows it. The implementation should always be driven by the end result we want.
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
No no no no no! Please no! I NEVER EVER EVER want to see a sidebar in BeOS. I never want to see image thumbnailing in Tracker! Feature creep is BAD!
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
thumbnailing in tracker I could handle ... but sidebar ... NO WAY.
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
100% agreed. Thumbnailing should also have to be switched on, unlike in Windows XP where if it sees a single jpeg in a folder it automatically puts them in that horrid slideshow type mode where you can only see one row of files along the bottom. Gah.
And MYOB, I'm also very wary of feature creep. If you want a shock - take a look at Michael's summing up of things suggested on glass elevator (theres a link to it in this thread:
http://haiku-os.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=426). Now obviously not all of them are going to make it in - but there are some things that just made me recoil in horror. For example "BBitmap should be able to apply filters to certain parts of images"...what?!!! My beautiful clean API, where art thou?
Simon
ps: A bit off topic, sorry....maybe start a new thread if you want to discuss it more
2 MYOB, sykosis & tb100
... Hi there!
Please, do not off-top. I've create this thread only for discuss my sketches.
Hold on to Your understanding,
Haplishe.
WindowManages, skins, EyeCandy's and haplishe's sketches...
Hi guys!
Creation of decors/themes for Haiku Window Manager is much simpler, than was in Dano. I think that many stuff from haplishe's sketches without the big efforts, will be incarnate to "real" skin.
Maybe even shadows and some other elements... (mouse shadow exists already ;o))
Hey this is AGG, guys! Absolutely Greatest enGine!
Also, for the Haiku Window Manager R1, 3dEyes will be create wrapper for WindowBlinds skins.
About a modern-glass-eyecandy-UI-design...
Oh.. Its very difficultly for me right now. For creation of the real clever design (in fact, for example, with "Aqua" worked a lot of professional designers and usability specialists!).
It is not base knowledges of classic HUD (Human Interface Design) and Aqua Human Interface, which are at me.
Those, who will create default (base) UI for Haiku R2 will must assume the experience of designers and constructors Aqua, Enlightenment and Gnome.
Taking from it only the best, processing experience of previous generations, Haiku designers will be able to represent UI, which before was not yet present.
But this work need to begin already now.
Gonx, Stubear and Haplishe already do first steps on this road. It is right, in fact they open a door...

Any new mockups/drawings to show us? 8)
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
... keep in touch - afaik a new version of decor is on the way and programmers are working on it, please, be patient...
About a next version of Haplishe Decor
Oh, you know, now such time, we were so overloaded. Work goes, but alas by not those rates which I wanted by...
Also, I think soon we will make a skin for Haiku Window Manager... hey! :D
This will be the fantastic adventure for us...

AFAIK, Zeta R1 is skinnable, and for such themable. So why not make some skin for Zeta to test how it's cool or not ?
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
no, there is no reason that everything is so small.
bal8664 - yeah that is now about perfect better than mine now!
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
I am totally agree with Ronald about sizes ... try to use such minimised theme on a laptop / touchpad in the train :?
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
... no probs! i'll be glad to discuss your ones
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
thanks! :D
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
I think Haiku must be themable.
There must be a Theme manager and so everybody can personalize his gui.
I think in future the users will create new themes or copy themes like xp or osx aqua or make portings from linux apps like superkaramba or kxdocker.
But my opinion is that it's VERY important that the Haiku theme and icons will be like BeOS R5 or Zeta, otherwise there will be a caos like linux without a standart and thousands of different gui's!
My version of GUI. Your opinions, additions are welcome
if Haiku should provide the tools to make themes then it will have some control of how the themes would look.
