Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Forum thread started by philcostin on Fri, 2009-03-13 10:18

I saw recently that some developers had expressed an interest in creating a native web browser for Haiku and it got me thinking about names...

How does NetPoetry or NetPoetic sound?

I'm kind of new to Haiku and BeOS and maybe you guys have some better ideas, (or have already chosen what you would like to call it) - so this is really just a brainstorming thread.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

"Mir" is pretty good. It is also the name of an alternate Earth in the "Time Odyssey" science fiction book series by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. A good little series for those who like to read science fiction like myself :)

In the book they named their alternate world that for similar reasons as you used for coming up with it as a browser name.

I can't say you've "won" the contest that this thread has sort of become, but it is definitely among the finalists :)

As I said before the name Tranquility has lost some of its luster for me and for now I am just going to keep focusing on the code.

"Breeze".

I, too, like the connotation of "Tranquility", but, as a few contributors have pointed out and admitted, it suffers from being " does not roll off the tongue". So I hope "Breeze" brings the feel and arouses association of experience similar to "Tranquility".

But I'll add:

Whatever name Ryan has his personal preference to and decision on should have our full respect. Who else is best entitled to naming his application? But it is great to see how this tread can excite the imaginations of many, and how people "brainstorm" free.

Yeah. Got a bit carried away by my own genius. Sorry. Won't happen again ;) Or it might...

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

What about "Soyuz" it has an extra syllable and might be easier to say.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Serenity gets my vote - it's what I feel whenever I'm using Haiku ;)
SurfBoard is a close second...

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Want do you think about :
Hawaii

  • it sounds Haiku-ish
  • it represents an island of tranquility where you can surf,
  • it evokes the journey ( for every one but Bryce Groff ;-p )

Great name! Very positive.

And we can keep the surfer icon. :}

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

As long as it doesn't open the door to future applications choosing names that start with 'Ha', like all those 'Be-something' names (OK, those are excused because that 'Be' fully refers to 'Be', the company name).

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I definitely like Prose for a word processor. Serenity is also good. Limmerick or so would be nice. NetPoetry is also nice. Won't someone start a poll or something?

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

agreed. Finally, a halfway decent name for a browser - it sounds like fun. Assuming WebPositive is definitely out, this gets my vote, FWIW...

All these attempts to somehow shoehorn poetry styles seemed quite forced, contrived even. I dunno, none of them seemed to roll off the tongue. I'm not sure what else was left, did 'Villanelle' get mentioned? 'Doggerel'?

At first I thought is was as bad as most other suggestions here, but now that I think about it I kind of like it. And since Apple got away with "safari" so why shouldn't "Hawaii" work as a name? Even though I think NetOptimist is still more BeOS:ish

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I would like to poit that Explorer (from Microsoft), Voyager (Amiga) and Sputnik (Amiga too) are all web browser names related to some space engines (satellites or probes). So Mir and Viking could be added to this list, too.
And we can still go trough the list of things sent to space. There are a lot of interesting names to pick there.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Hehe....the name for the newest node for the International Space Station is "Serenity"

Does that mean "Serenity" gets two votes...?

Cheers,

Will

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

What about:

Icarus <- in honor to the sun that gives us all the light and heat needed to live, source of life for the whole planet and a witness of thousands of years of evolution.

Ikrus to fit more with Haiku style.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Tranquility is a good name, IMO. But if you think 'tranquility' is too long for a name of the browser, and if you like some words from japanese, then 'SIZU' may be a good choice, as it's meaning is very similar to 'tranquility' and it is short.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

So I'm a bit late to this party but since traditional Haiku contains a reference to a season and one of the common references is momiji (Colored Leaves) and since the Haiku logo is also colored leaves, I suggest momiji as the browser name.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Actually quite like SerIku (or better: Seriku).

Tony

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

In my opinion, Tranquility is still far from perfect, it's not an easy word to remember, it's not a long word, but hard to spell for the non-english territory people. Apple is being referred a lot in the Be / Haiku scene, they choose the most plain names one can think of for their applications. That's because a LOT of people have to use, remember, and refer to them on forums etc. The "i" is their so called trademark, like iTunes, iMovie, but they use simple words like Mail too. If you see those names, at the first sight you instantly now what the purpose of the application is. Ironically, Safari (the web browser) requires some thinking, but safari can be linked to exploration (explorer), so after all it's not that bad. But if I first look at the name Tranquility, the last thing I can think of is a web browser without knowing the purpose of the application. For a splinter cell like action game, it's perfect. As for the best one I ran into this thread, I think Surfer is the ultimate winner. It's plain as hell, easy to link the name and the function, and super easy to remember. And all kind of people from children to grandmas in all countries will understand it. Please, consider this again:)

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

If you don't like Surfer, then please choose a short name, that if you give to like a 100 different people and tell them to write down what kind of application they think the name may cover, at least 50 of them respond "a web browser". Actually, large companies (like Apple) care about this very much, so they actually invest in such studies before making a product. But I know, this is a non-profit organization, so there is no budget for this. Anyway, you can make it using a form and the publicity of some large e-zines like osnews, I'm sure they would help you with this, if you present them like the 5 best names from this thread. With a couple thousand answers, you'll get a good oversight of the efficiency of the names.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Having thought of a few ideas, the ones I like most are 'Synapse' and 'Compass'. The prior suggests nodes connecting to each other and hence the web, the latter implies navigation of the web. I think the prior is a more evocative, beautiful word, but the latter is easier to say and better suited for internationalisation.

Aside from that, the idea of space names is pretty good too. 'Mir' is pretty good, although people will always associate it with the former Russian space station, and 'Cosmos' is nice as well. I don't mind 'Tranquility' or 'Serenity' either, the latter will remind many of the TV series though.

Personally, I think short one-or-two syllable names work best, and that names which consist of words combined, particularly in CamelCase, feel very dated. I think any name chosen should be forward looking and represent something elegant.

I think the Haiku community should do a brainstorm to figure out some sort of sensible, coherent 'pattern' for naming the different parts of the OS. I know this may seem premature, but one of the big problems that Linux has had is that they have terrible, non-obvious, ugly names for everything, especially with the K-prefix for KDE applications, and changing names after the fact is difficult.

"Internet Explorer" is the only browser name that indicates what it does to the average man in the street. 'Firefox', 'Safari', 'Chrome', 'Opera'.

While Surfer explains what it is, it feels quite dated and 90s ("surfer dude!"), I'm not sure "surf" is used much in the context of the web anymore, and doesn't really match the soft 'feather' feeling that the Haiku brand invokes either.

It's why I like 'Compass' and 'Synapse'. They feel modern and also somewhat timeless, they invoke something quite 'gentle', and what they do is implied without being irksome.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

How about Sonnet?

When I hear compass I think of Netscape for some reason.
Synapse...eh, doesn't mean anything. Sonnet stays with the
poetic theme.

Hawaii

I think Hawaiʻi fits well with Haiku, this is probably the best name listed.

My own idea is Maui, it is one of the Hawaiian Islands, that in turn is named after the polynesian hero Māui. What funny is that I live on what is meant to Māui's fishing-canoe and polynesian fishing-canoes are where we get surfboards from.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I registered an account just to post that "Publicity" is the best name for a browser I've heard since Safari (which is itself the best name since Mosaic). I do not particularly like the names Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, Voyager, Navigator, Omniweb, etc. But anything about poetry, japanese, or surfing is worse, and compound words with a capitalized letter in the middle is the worst of all! And Tranquility or Serenity are names I'd give to programs that BLOCKED you from going on the web...

edit: hm, just "City" wouldn't be bad either

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

“Publicity” may sounds great in english, but in french it's too close to “Publicité” which means advertisement. ( That's also a mistake French people make when they begin to learn english. They replace advertisement by publicity. :)
So I don't know for you, but personally I wouldn't like to use a browser which means advertisement in my language. ( And it would be a shame if I don't eat my own dog-food. )

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

How about stealing "Senryu".

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

My favorites:

Numbah 1) Surfboard
Numbah 2) Loom

Suggesting:

bLoom (from the suggestion "Loom", also I like saying it)
sUbmerge (submerge U... in the wwwwater)

and secondly:
Sandpiper (energetic, cute)
Savannah (breezy, calm outdoor peace feeling,)
Bathysphere (diving apparatus that set a record of 3k feet)

Until then, may this post inspire.

Compass! What a perfect name. I already see the icon for it, wow. :) Nice work brainstorming here:)

My another suggestion:

LinkStream

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

i like the idea that invokes the idea of a journey like:

Pilgrim
NetTraveller

or named for an explorer such as:

Magellan (SP?) or Marco Polo

or to take the Be prefix, if there is going to be, as i think there should be, an app that integrates blogging tools, web browsing, chat/icq/irc clients, Voip and video chat,

we can call it BeConnected, HaiKonnected?

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

The best name for a native Haiku Browser would be...
Browser.

I know it breaks the nice Net.../Web... naming-scheme and it has no reference to Haiku/BeOS, but:
Most of the names that have been dropped here have little to no meaning to a user that is completely
new to Haiku.

Today, the Browser is one of the most important tools on a computer. A user should not
have to thin about or event to search for it.

Furthermore, Browser - in it's humble simplicity - stands for everything Haiku stands for: Clarity, simplicity - serenity.

The name Browser for - well, the browser - makes you (at least it makes me) feel like there is absolutely no doubt about what you can expect when you click the icon/menu entry the first time: A streamlined, efficient tool to browse the web that does not get in your way and let's you do the job.

What do you think?

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I like Browser very much! To be honest I tought about it also before, and I can't imagine why didn't someone came up with this from the big ones already. Maybe it's already a registered trademark or maybe it's just because it's weird to refer to it (like Apple's Mail application), when you mention it in a mail or on a forum it's hard to differentiate the browser itself from that specific haiku application. (that's why apple folks always refer to Mail as Mail.app which is kinda disappointing)
But anyways, in my opinion still these kind of names are best for naming a (hopefully becoming) popular application.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

As much as I love to come up with names, I'd be okay with Browser. Outside of Haiku it could be referred to as the "Haiku Browser". It doesn't have to have a name unless its meant to be cross-platform. Granted, it will be an important part of Haiku, but still just another Haiku application.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Indeed, “Browser” could have been a simple and descriptive name for a web browser. So in this case, why nobody else before used this as name for his web browser?

I'll take a really explicit example: applications in OSX.
If you look the common applications, they all have a name which match their functionality. I'm thinking of Mail, Address Book, DVD Player, TextEdit, Preview… And even if some of these applications have a "i" as prefix, their names are still intuitive: iCal, iPhoto, iMovie… So, what the damn hell they called the browser Safari?

Actually, a web browser is more than a part of a system, it's a separate application.
Also, this application is one of the most important ( not the majority can pretend using a system without a web browser, even more since the Web 2.0 is on ). And as an important application it should have a personality.

That's why this thread began, and that's why I'll disagree with this name.
Then, if this name is chosen, I would have no problem. :)

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Actually I do not want this discussion to be a 'bikeshed' discussion so I did not submit any suggestion recently, and would not.
However, today my wife suggested a name so I post it here. (actually, I was forced to :) )

How about 'Andromeda'?
It is well known to many people over the world, and sounds pretty, and gives us feeling of exploration (of course not 'sea' but 'the space'). If the name does not imply it is a web browser, than you may call it 'Andromeda Browser'.

+1 for Verse

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

my favorites are

kumo
Hawaii

and here is my suggestion

すづくり [suzukuri] - meaning: building a web

PS: can you guys put a poll it would be helpful!

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

"Haveler" or "Haler"
A portmanteau of Haiku's Traveler.

Since the OS name is Haiku, I thought it's interesting to have a play of words for its browser name.

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I didn't read all the comment, but here's my suggestion:

Ginko Browser

Ginko is a Haiku-related word that means "A walk outside to observe nature and write haiku" that could mean: "Going to surf the web to observe all the net and enjoy it"

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

I personally like Horizon. It sounds nice, melds nicely with Haiku. And it connotes a space away from where you are.

bill

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

Taiko would be a great name for a messaging app

Ginko Browser

+1 for Ginko Browser!

Excellent suggestion! Ginko is also a species of tree with a very unique leaf (biradial veins instead of branching) so it ties into the "leaf menu" and Haiku logo leaf theme. Plus, Ginko is thought to improve memory. I don't know about you, but the older I get, the more the web substitutes for a working memory. Multiple meanings are more fun. :)

Re: Name Suggestion for native Haiku Web Browser

+1 Serenity

+1 Hawaii

+1 NetPoetic

Although I would always shorten NetPoetic to Netic. It has connotations to 'kinetic' and (to a lesser degree) 'connect'.
