Wouldn't it be a good idea to add OpenDocument translator(s) to the Haiku?

OpenDocument translator

Yes, but first we need a word processor that can handle all its features. :^)

ODF viewer

Perhaps someone could create a viewer, like wordviewer. No editing just viewing.
With translators for ODF, MS Word, StarOffice, OpenOffice, WordPerfect ........ :)

RTF, HTML, PDF, etc... As pointed out by several persons in the industry - it makes a lot of sense to write plugins for major web browsers to be able to render common document formats for readonly viewing... it's just a matter of time.

I think we should have a "preview translator" if we don't already - similar to what SkyOS has. Using this, anyone would be able to write a translator that renders to a BMP image or something similar... possibly even a format that supports text-selection for copying?

Re: ODF viewer

Perhaps HAIKU could become a mentor at the next Google Summer of Code 2006, and propose this as an idea?

There is odfReader for FireFox, http://www.alcoholicsunanimous.com/odfreader/ and it does work with BeOS.

OpenDocument translator

I can hardly wait for the OpenOffice port to be. I think that will be huge for the community.

ditto...talk about a serious boost to BeOS/Haiku! - we'll get all sorts of people flocking to it just to see if the rumors are true!...

you don't seem to get the idea of beos translators. they're all about being written once, placed in the system and make every beos app able to handle specific formats. so no need for a application bringing its translators.

"I am" talking about a system wide translator, but for that to be usefull you need an application to interpret what the translator sends.
In this case the viewer would be StyledEdit, but currently its not good enough, hence the need for a new application.
