Hi,

should I install BeOS Max or do I need Zeta?

Any recommendations?

Any

You can use BeOS, Zeta, or a linux distribution (at least it works on Debian Sarge and Ubuntu Breezy). Maybe also a *BSD.

Then that does beg the question, if you can use a linux distro are you free to use any one. Since I am sitting on Fedora Core 4, and have been interested in Haiku's development for some time now... It might be the best thing to ask.

At least I won't stop you to use any distribution you want :D
The buildsystem isn't tied to a particular distribution. I named Debian and Ubuntu just because I'm sure they work.
