What would be a good hardware configuration for Haiku

Forum thread started by TheNerd on Thu, 2007-09-13 11:52

For those of you who have a working Haiku build on real hardware...

What would be the ideal HW configuration to run Haiku on in its current state? I would consider buying a new machine to run it if I knew what to get.

thanks

no problem!

Re: What would be a good hardware configuration for Haiku

I'll add a few quick notes.

There is support for other video & sound cards, but the ones I recommend in the other thread are the better & popular ones to use.; Geforce, Radeon for video ( but not newer models than those I specify in other thread ); Sound Blaster Live 5.1 for sound ( careful, most but not all SB Live cards work ).

You should watch out for SATA. There is support for some older SATA controllers ( mostly Nvidia based ). Work is being done on AHCI but I believe it isn't finished yet. If you get board with AHCI make sure it also has 40 pin ide connector where you can hook up an older pata ide drive ( for now ) until AHCI gets working after which you can switch over to SATA in the future.

Intel & VIA are probably more compatible motherboard chipsets though Nvidia should work fine too.

You'll probably need add in cards for sound & network because most of the newer onboard stuff is not supported. So, buy the motherboard you want, test out the onboard sound/network & if they don't work then can suggest some add in cards.

OSS support is coming to Haiku & that should allow you to use almost any sound card out there.

You have to "dig" through the source if you really want to know whether a certain hardware component will work. Look through network & sound cards and maybe you can find a motherboard with supported onboard stuff.

Thanks. That gives me a bit more direction. I hope I can find an older compatible system. I'm sure it will only improve with time :)
