WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

It is with much regret and disappointment that I must announce that the Haiku project have decided to cancel WalterCon 2007 for lack of community interest. Those who have already registered will have all money refunded. The perceived reason for this would be late announcement combined with the community being spread across the globe. Efforts are already under way to prevent such problems stemming from last-minute planning and to make WalterCon not only a success, but a hit. On a more positive note, Michael Phipps has been invited to speak at the upcoming LinuxWorld conference. This is an excellent opportunity for exposure for Haiku both as a project and as a community.

DW,

Bummer to hear about the cancellation.

Thanks for the effort in setting it up on short notice. I think the late announcement definitely did contribute to the lack of participation. I know for myself, this was partially the case, as I had already made tentative plans for that weekend prior to the announcement.

Hopefully the content and material (presentations, etc.) that had been prepared already will still be made available in some form so that the community can benefit from it :)

This is fucking bullshit. I just bought my tickets today through priceline.

I have tickets and nowhere to go.

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

That's no good ... Can you get a refund or trade them for something else ?

If that doesn't pan out, maybe get another ticket and take the missus on a holiday.

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

Name Your Own Price means no refunds or changes. Why is http://waltercon.haiku-os.org still up ? I could, perhaps, try the credit card company or just go to San Francisco alone, but I won't be able to make Linux World either.

see my rage

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

I was somewhat surprised at the cancellation. I really wanted to go, but as others have noted, the short notice is a sure way to cut attendance down horribly, due to previously made schedules, combined with people often not having vacation time. Chances are I would have been as sleep-deprived as last year :/ but I definitely wanted to go, and I was going to make the final decision (things are in a bit of an uproar for me right now, as I'm also attempting to change employers) this week, but I see it has been made for me.

The location wasn't a problem for me: the time of year (with enough notice) wasn't a problem for me: the costs involved for tickets and hotel costs didn't present a problem for me: it was just the short notice.

Perhaps the next one you should try up in my neck of the woods: I'm fairly sure there's a sufficient amount of hotel space, and unlike those goofball Franciscans, I'm thinking around here they're willing and wanting you to spend your money at their location (though it also isn't the cheapest place to do business, but I suspect SF is more expensive) and heck, the building where I'm currently working has an empty floor right above me! Also, the Seattle area has a decent bus system, and Pike's Place fish market, what more could you want? You could actually get trout-slapped with one thrown at you!

A note about this site: WTF is it with having a "Preview comment" button but no way to choose to simply post it??? This fails the "Mr. Obvious" test for user interfaces :P

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

I would have attended, but I was already booked for those dates. It was the first Waltercon close enough for me to think of going.
Seattle would be a great choice.

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

Ditto.

I've had my tickets for over two weeks. I say "tickets" plural because my wife and I decided to go a few days early and make a vacation out of it.

I was taking an advance on vacation days because I just switched jobs too.

Talk about screwed. I'm still going to SF. WalterCon or not.

I vote we have an impromptu WalterCon of our own. Might as well use those tickets, right?

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

I'm quite disappointed as well. I had planned to attend but since I have a sick mother I didn't want to commit until the last day of registration, July 30. I'm in the bay area anyway, so maybe an informal meetup would still be possible in a coffe shop or brewpub for the people who already purchased tickets or live in the bay area. Someone just need to send us the t-shirts ;)

Since some of us had airplane tickets and travel plans already arranged:

Announcing FalterCon 2007 an un-official meet up on August 11th in the Bay Area.

Re: WalterCon 2007 Canceled, Michael Phipps at LinuxWorld

Sorry about the convention - I wasnt going - but just wanted to comment.

At this very early stage, it seems to me, a convention is a bit much. You need to do two things: 1) build a community - you are generally unknown to the public at large 2) finish Haiku.

I'm pulling for you, but dont sweat things like this. Go to where the people are, be in things the people read, be seen in things the people see and finish (release version) Haiku.

If the convention is more important than releasing an initial version (I doubt this), then you have nothing to begin with.

The conventions will take care of themselves.

Sorry to those that were going who now cant.
