Haiku Turns 6!
We are excited to announce that having reached the 18th of August, 2007, the Haiku project is now six years old!
Read on for some more details...
When the decision to start Haiku these six years ago was made (then still called OpenBeOS), the motivation to reach the goal of creating a functioning BeOS clone was very high. Over time this motivation has seen many ups and downs, and there have been times where development was really stagnant, but there were always the other times in which you could really feel how the system got forward. These rushes of development have also motivated me personally a number of times to follow my todo list and to eventually achieve my development goals. We are pleased to look back and see that we have managed to make this vision become reality to a great extent.
The past few weeks have been very productive. Many critical problems were solved, and stability increased on a daily basis. We can say that we take big steps towards our first alpha release which is set to happen when we can officially self-host. This means that we anticipate to get to a state where a current revision of the Haiku tree can be checked out and built successfully, including all necessary tools - completely from within Haiku. There are still some bigger steps to take until this becomes a reality, but we find it important to have a concrete target to reach.
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people that helped us get where we are now. The continued effort of the various developers have made the system bootable, and the great support from the community helped us not to lose our faith during the process. We are grateful for both, and we hope that we can fulfill the hopes and expectations set into Haiku.
As a small "present" there is an exclusive birthday T-Shirt design available from Cafepress. Get it while it's hot!
Thank you all!

Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Oh no 6__years! (note the pause) A moment of grief struck me.
Then I listened to a piece of music (also not done yet) made with R5 and a synthesizer and Soundplay and VST plugins.
That was maybe 3 years ago. Now I have bought (finally!) an Echo Mia MIDI 24/96 pro sound card which is working due to Korli (thanks!); more or less Haiku development.
USB is beginning to work nicely. I still use Gobe Productive which I have again used with much pleasure (this time for creating various possibilities of furniture for our newly bought house).
I still love and I'm pretty sure I'll always love the BeOS design and functionality.
I hereby thank you, thank all of you, thank you very much!
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Many congrats. I learned about Haiku (and BeOS) recently and have gotten quite interested in it, and I am very much looking forward to the Alpha (and the Beta, RC, and R1 release to follow). Keep up the great work!
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Congratulation!
Very good work, guys! I learned about BeOS in days when it already don't support my hardware, but after several trying to run BeOS and Haiku in VMWare I need to say that I love it's clean look and architecture at all.
I have several friends, who also are interested into this project. So even in the Ukraine exist great interest in your project! :-)
P.S. Registered specially to say thanks to you all for your work and to express hope that you'll not be demotivated and project will release stable and usable OS. :-)
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
I've recently joined the Haiku community and it's great. The only thing I regret is not knowing about it sooner. Long live Haiku :)

Re: Haiku Turns 6!
I've actually been here those 6 years and from time to time have used the BeOS with various outcomes. My general driver problems has made it a bit troublesome. Hope is here and future might make Haiku a viable option for me (I hope).
Something must obviously has been done right as the last year (especially) seems to have attracted A LOT of new people to Haiku. The little media coverage it has gotten has given results. Good job!
Now to finalize, happy birthday Haiku and it's devs, and to all you new fans, don't hesitate to join www.teamhaiku.com to bring the knowledge about Haiku to more people =).

Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Happy birthday. 6 years is a long time; I hope R1 is still within reach, I'd like to see this project (including R2) progress.
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Congratulations guys, keep up the good work! I can't wait for R1 :)
I hope that once that stage is reached a lot more coders will come out of the wood work - I'd love to get stuck in and help with Haiku dev now but I just don't have the free time. I'm determined to do something for the project though. Long live the media OS!
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
My deepest gratitude to all the developers of Haiku. The impact of having Haiku (or any open source OS) goes far beyond of just having another operating system. Rays of light in corrupt corporate jungle...

Re: Haiku Turns 6!
Congratulations. Now when is Haiku going to have a theme song like BeOS did? BeOS (said like Homer Simpson saying donut).
Speaking of the BeOS theme song. I'm playing it right now. I also have the PR film they made demonstrating BeOS. I'm ready for Haiku to remake that too. :)

All I ask for is choice. I want to be able to go into any store you can buy a computer in and say, "I want ______ OS on this computer." Is that too much to ask? We can't always be looking out Windows. Some of us need to get work done.
Re: Haiku Turns 6!
You mean the PR film (2 parts) you can see on youTube? The only 2 movies about BeOS on youTube?
Those are great, I was again amazed when I saw them a few days ago.
PS: I took a look at Syllable too, dang they have ported the webkit already ;-p
PS2: but Haiku has 24 bit audio hehe
