R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now Available
To all the Haiku fans out there who have been eagerly looking forward to getting their hands on the first official Haiku CD, the wait is finally over: Haiku R1/Alpha 1 CDs are now available on the Haiku Store! Since a lot of sweat and tears have gone into this first Haiku release, we wanted the availability of our first official CD to also be an opportunity for the community to give something back to the project. To that effect, we have priced it as a commemorative CD which, for every unit you purchase, $15 will go into the project coffers. Thus, not only do you get a nicely branded Haiku CD, but you also help fund the future development of Haiku.
Show your support, and head over to the Haiku Store!
(Note: Cafepress-created CDs are CD-R with a full color silkscreen label)

I've just ordered it thanks :)
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
Price of cd is too much for people in developing countries like India 20$ = 1000 Rs. A good quality blank cd cost RS 5 here and Rs 25 for speed post anywhere in india. why don't you setup your cd manufacturing plant in india for indian customers so that both remain in profit.
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
If you can't afford it, just burn the ISO to a blank CD.
$15 of the $20 from the Haiku CD's goes directly to Haiku Inc.
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
Sorry, yes, I should have responded to this previously.
Currently, the "Commemorative" CDs are almost purely for fund-raising purposes. We do not "manufacture" them, but rather we rely on CafePress to create them on an as-needed basis. CafePress handles the ordering, production, and shipping for us, and for every CD sold, Haiku, Inc. receives $15 as a 'donation'.
In return for this donation amount, the donator receives a nice-looking CD containing the R1/Alpha 1 release on it.
This particular CD will likely only be available until the next release (whether it be Alpha 2, Beta, or whatever), at which point we will likely produce a new label and contents.
In the future, once Haiku reaches more stability and popularity, we will likely consider replicating CDs in bulk (usually 1000 at a time) and providing them at cheaper prices. The drawback is that we would have to handle much of the ordering/shipping process ourselves at that point. We believe it's simply too soon for this yet.
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
@the123king I can afford this cd but many can't and i have already downloaded that iso image. Internet downloading speed in developing countries is very low and price very high (fortunately india has worlds lowest telecom rates) so downloading iso is difficult. also when one get ubuntu cd free delivered to home he will not buy haiku for 20$ so reducing price is necessary.
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
As Umccullough said, this CD is purely for fund-raising purposes.
Haiku, inc don't have the fund to send at a loss CD nor the manpower to handle the ordering/shipping process. Perhaps you could propose yourself, if you are from India and you have some free times...
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
Sadly, we don't have the marketing budget that Canonical does...
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available

Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available

Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
got mine on wednesday :D
Re: R1/Alpha 1 Commemorative CD Now available
Got mine the other day! If I do nothing else with it, it'll be a fine complement to my collection of BeOS CDs going way back to the first publicly available BeBox (0.7 or some such; too many years-n-beers) and my two BeBoxen.
It boots in QEMU. Looks good!
Dunno if I've mentioned this before: I used BeOS as my primary system from '98 to '01 or '02. Just as soon as Haiku has a good email app and a good standards-compliant web browser, I may 'go back'. Even better would be VM capability, so I could boot Linux and Xp as needed (there are legacy apps I need, like OOffice, Illustrator and GIMP).
As much as I've used X11 and Unix/Linux over the years, I've never really found them that 'friendly' or stable. And the recent MacOS UI isn't that great either. BeOS worked. And worked smoothly. I still believe BeOS/Haiku can be the next 'great' desktop system.
Y'all keep up the great work now, hea'?
