WebKit port well underway
For a Haikuware Bounty, Ryan Leavengood set out to port WebKit, a framework to render modern web contents. Actually, from the start it was supposed to be a first shot to get the basics to compile for Haiku, as a complete port is a huge endeavour that keeps a skilled team busy for many months.
The deadline for the bounty has recently been reached and the set goal has been achieved more or less. Read Ryan's summary at Haikuware for the details.
Now that the first step is taken, everyone's invited to help further develop and later on optimize and streamline the code. Marcus Jacob and Andrea Anzani have already stepped up to give Ryan a hand.
The plan is to have the port hosted directly in the official WebKit repository. Before that can happen a few more basics need to be implemented, which should happen within the next few weeks.
Ryan has provided a developer's document with detailed build instructions for those who wish to work on the port. Check it out.

Re: WebKit port well underway
I just want to give two large thumbs up, Ryan, for sticking with this massive undertaking. It is impressive that you've accomplished this much in these months. I hope the code will be entered into the webkit SVN soon so it will be easier to maintain and for others to help you.
Next to a fast and native browser, this also adds a couble of dependencies for webkit that will be useful for Haiku overall. (ICU, libxml2, CURL and SQLite)
What will the first site be that you will browse when it works?

Re: WebKit port well underway
Thanks for the kind words Pieter.
That is a good question and something I was thinking about from pretty early on. Right now I actually have google.com in the HaikuLauncher, but it doesn't even show up yet so I don't think it counts ;)
When things work well this web-site will be the first I browse to and certainly the first to use for a screenshot. Second place is haikuware.com and then the WebKit web-site (those guys certainly deserve a nod.)

Meanwhile we'll be able to use Links :)

Re: WebKit port well underway
Wow Links can do graphics now? Pretty cool! We don't need no stinkin' WebKit ;)
Seriously though that is useful for a quick browse for something. Though I hope to make the WebKit browser as snappy and fast as possible.
