Haiku Gets Featured Speaker Spot & Booth at SCaLE 6x Expo

Haiku to be featured at SCaLE 6x Expo on February 9 & 10, 2008I am pleased and very excited to announce that our application for a booth and a feature speaker spot at the SCaLE 6x Expo have both been accepted. Yes, you read well: we will not only have a booth (for the second consecutive year), but Haiku developer and “Googler” Bruno G. Albuquerque will also be presenting our project and operating system as one of the few featured speakers that SCaLE invites every year among prominent members of the open source community. This is the first time Haiku is awarded a speaker spot at a renowned open source event, and we are proud of this achievement.

SCaLE 6x, officially called the Sixth Southern California Linux Expo, will be held on the weekend of February 9 and 10, 2008 at the Westin Los Angeles Airport hotel (map). Details about the Haiku booth will be worked out in the coming months, and they will be announced as information becomes available.

Needless to say, all Haiku fans both in the LA area or otherwise are welcome to join. Come hang out with us at the Haiku booth, and help us spread the word! If you are interested in taking part in any way or form, please let us know by contacting us (select "Marketing" under category in the contact form).

SCaLE is an open source event that gathers open source communities, academic institutions and commercial exhibitors. Started in 2002, this expo is supported by the presence of numerous open source projects, and is sponsored by prominent businesses such as IBM, Google and Dell. Attendance has been growing over the years, and the trend is expected to continue on the rise in upcoming SCaLE 6x.

After our first report, Michael's stuff finally arrived and we were able to set up Haiku on a projector screen, which actually helped bring more attention to our booth. The impression that I have been getting from the people visiting our booth is that the reception of our ideal of a desktop OS designed for, focused on, and optimized for the desktop is very positive. It has been a very encouraging experience so far.

We were also extremely pleased to have the presence of Travis Geiselbrecht, the creator of NewOS, who showed up at our booth in the afternoon. Not only did we spend quality time with Travis discussing Haiku and our kernel (which is based on NewOS), but we also had dinner together where we exchanged plenty of stories from the good old days.

We also had our first Birds of a Feather session in the evening, where Michael Phipps introduced Haiku to an audience of approximately twenty people. All the attendants showed great interested in our work, as evidenced by the good number of interesting questions during the Q&A session towards the end of the presentation. In my opinion, the presentation was a success, as it both introduced Haiku to those who did not know about our project, and it also helped show the progress made to those who already knew about it.

SCaLE 5x First Day Report - Part I

SCaLE 5x started this morning and it has been a lot of fun so far. Axel, Michael (Phipps), Jorge (Mare) and myself (BGA) came down to the exhibit floor early this morning to setup the booth in advance of the opening. We have a 10x10 booth with a table and a couple of chairs, so we setup a small form factor desktop PC hooked up to a 20 inch LCD monitor, and a couple of laptops, an IBM running Haiku natively, and a MacBook Pro running Haiku inside Parallels. We are still waiting for an additional PC and a projector that did not make in time, as Michael's luggage was sent to the wrong destination.

There is a lot of traffic on floor, and a lot of people has stopped by and shown interest in what we are doing. And the audience is also right: plenty of geeks with a passion for innovative stuff. Let's hope that we get a good audience at the first BoF tonight.

Haiku Lecture at Open Source Event in Brazil

Under the sponsorship of Google, BFS Team lead engineer Bruno Albuquerque is scheduled to give a Haiku-related lecture at the upcoming Encontro Mineiro de Software Livre 2006 (Minas Gerais Open Source Forum 2006) to be held on October 10, 11 and 12 at the Ouro Preto City Convention Center. Titled "Haiku OS -- Challenges of Creating an Operating System", the lecture will introduce Haiku with a focus on the technical challenges and the motivations behind the creation of the project. The talk is scheduled for October 12 at 10:00 AM (auditorium #1).

Encontro Mineiro de Software Livre is an annual open source event with an estimated attendance of 500 people that gathers students, users, and developers, as well as private and public companies that offer open source software solutions.
