Redesigned Haiku websiteThe redesigned Haiku website

In preparation for the upcoming Haiku R1 Alpha 1 release, we are working on a Drupal upgrade and a redesign of the Haiku website. As a result, haiku-os.org is scheduled to operate in read-only mode from approximately September 9th at 17:00 through the 14th at 00:00AM (UTC). During this time, no major outages are expected and the website will be online for the most part, but the following operations will be disabled:

  • Creating new accounts
  • Editing existing accounts
  • Posting new content (to forums, blogs, documents, etc.)
  • Editing any existing content
  • Posting new comments or editing existing ones

The upgraded website is scheduled to be fully operational in time for the Alpha 1 release date. Until then, please use the mailing lists or our IRC channels as means of communication with the community. Our bug reporting tool http://dev.haiku-os.org is unaffected, and will continue to operate as usual.

Website Upgraded to Drupal 5

News posted by nielx on Wed, 2009-02-25 19:49

This Saturday, the 28th of February, the software that powers the website, Drupal and 47 (!) modules, have been upgraded to the Drupal 5 platform. This upgrade creates the foundation to continue to improve the functionality and information on our website, as the demands change, also in the face of the upcoming Alpha 1 release.

While the upgrade team has concluded that most of the data migrated smoothly, there are some rough edges. Most notably, the data of the conferences did not migrate properly, and as such, we are now in the process of reconstructing the conference module. Please read on for a more detailed list of issues. Naturally we expect some more minor issues popping up. If you find any one of them, please check out the list below, and if the issue is not there, drop a comment!

The known issues are the following:

  • The conference functionality has disappeared.
  • Pages like the about page show authoring information, while it did not used to.
  • The OSNews and Slashdot icons are missing from the teasers
  • The Read more link needs some styling.
  • The image system needs an overhaul.
  • The legacy docs need to be restored. Reported by adek336
  • The lay-out underperforms on wide screens. Reported by kallisti5.
  • The new image gallery (thanks Remi!) has a wrong reference to certain paths
  • Updated copyright notices (meta tags and footer)
  • Changed "Haiku Screenshot Tour" under the "Learn More" block in the About page to point to the new gallery.

Drop a comment if there is more. We did not thoroughly test the functionality with the different permission groups. Is anything not working, while it used to work? Drop a line!

Notice: Scheduled Maintenance for dev.haiku-os.org

News posted by nielx on Wed, 2008-06-11 19:00

On Monday the 16th of June, from 09:00 GMT onwards, dev.haiku-os.org will be down for a server move and software upgrade. The website team has chosen to combine these two operations in order to minimize downtime. The operation is expected to take about three hours. Live progress updates will be offered on the#haiku channel on freenode.

The service will be moved to hosting that has been offered by Scott Palmer from Unixheads.org, a non-profit that is dedicated to providing hosting and mirroring services to open source projects. We would like to thank Scott Palmer and Unixheads.org for their very generous offer to take over the hosting of one of our services that is so vital for the community.

Notice: user account changes on dev.haiku-os.org

News posted by nielx on Mon, 2008-06-02 18:23

Update: as of now this change is in effect. If you are encountering any problems, read on to learn how to get help.

The website team is constantly trying to improve the user experience of the various websites we maintain. In order to improve our existing infrastructure, we are currently preparing a move to a new server infrastructure, which is offered by the Internet Systems Consortium. ISC is a non-profit that, amongst many other things, hosts kernel.org. We are more than grateful for this offer, which will improve our responsiveness, especially during exposure on Slashdot or OSNews.

This transition means that we have to redesign several aspects of the server infrastructure. One of these things is the user account handling. Because of the interactive nature of the main website and the bug tracker, much of the functionality is tied to user accounts. Up to now we have been able to use the user database of the main website to authenticate users against dev.haiku-os.org. However, in the new environment, we have to break this connection, until a better solution is implemented.

On Monday the 9th of June, users of dev.haiku-os.org will no longer be able to log in with the account they created on the main website. If you have ever logged in on dev.haiku-os.org, you will be affected by this change. You will receive an email with a new (randomly generated) password, which you will be able to change to your liking.

Read on for a short list of questions and answers.

Q: I use dev.haiku-os.org on a regular basis. How will this influence my account details on www.haiku-os.org?

A: Your account details on www.haiku-os.org will not be changed. You will keep the same username and password you always had, and you can continue to log in on www.haiku-os.org with those. Only your login information for dev.haiku-os.org will change.

Q: I have never used dev.haiku-os.org, but I would like to in the future. Should I log in now with my current account details before the change on Monday?

A: No. Monday a new link will appear which will allow you to register a new account on dev.haiku-os.org. You will be able to create a new account whenever it is necessary.

Q: I want to change my email address. Does this mean I have to do it in two places?

A: Yes. After Monday you will have to change your account details on both www.haiku-os.org and dev.haiku-os.org.

Q: I am sure I have once logged in on dev.haiku-os.org, but I did not receive a new password. Neither can I register a new account under my old user name. What now?

A: Please send an email to Niels Reedijk (login required) with your user name and a description of your problem.

Haiku Website: Taking One Little Step Forward

News posted by koki on Sun, 2007-01-21 22:42

We finally have the long promised new website. It has taken much longer than expected, but hopefully the wait was worth it. I would like to briefly introduce some of the (not so obvious) changes, and try to explain how to make the best of the Haiku website as a tool for the community to contribute to our project.

About Section

  • Haiku Gallery
For starters, there is now a new Haiku Gallery. The gallery currently has a Haiku Screenshot Tour that gives a good visual overview of what Haiku looks like. We plan to gradually expand the number of screenshots to show various applications running in Haiku, and also use use the gallery to post photos of conferences, presentations and other Haiku related events.
  • Haiku Movies
There is also a new Haiku Movies page with links to videos on the web showing Haiku. At present, this page lists only a couple of videos, but we would like to expand this list with your help. So, if you know of any Haiku videos on the web that could be added to this list, please drop us a line with the URL, description and author information so that we can add it to the list.
  • FAQs
The frequently asked questions section has been divided into a General FAQ and a Development FAQ.

Development Section

This section has been slightly changed to make it more compact and focused. We should also note that our Project management and bug/issue tracking system (Trac) is back and that it has a new home at dev.haiku-os.org.

Documents Section

The Documents section has been reorganized into Developer Documents and End User Documents. Each category also has its own subcategories to make it easier to find the kind of document that you are looking for. We will most likely add new document categories as we see fit in the future.

Community Section

  • Haiku Blog-O-Sphere
We have setup a Haiku Blog-O-Sphere, where the Haiku admins will blog progress reports and other Haiku related posts. This will hopefully give the community a little bit of insight into what the core project members are doing a bit beyond of the commit logs.
  • Community Forums
The Community Forums have been migrated to the Drupal system. This was a difficult decision (and a bit controversial), but we decided to keep it all under one system, both for consistency of looks and easy of maintenance.
  • Wiki
Also, as you may have noticed, the wiki has been taken offline. There was too much duplication of content (which we want to avoid), and we would like to repurpose it so that it fulfills a distinct and useful role within the context of our web presence. I hope the community will understand and support this decision.

Other Goodies

At the end of every news post in the front page you will see a few additional icons. As some of you may guess, these allow you to:

  • Bookmark the post on del.icio.us
  • Bookmark the post on Google
  • Digg the post on digg.com
  • Search for the post on Technorati.

This is an easy way to spread the word about Haiku, and help raise its visibility on the web.

If you want an easy way to follow what's going on with Haiku, there are several RSS feeds that you can subscribe to:

As a matter of fact, there are many more pages on the website that have their own syndication feed, which you can easily identify by the icon.

User Accounts

All user accounts were migrated from the old website. If you find that you are unable to login to the new website, please try:

Acknowledgements

The new website was possible thanks to the help of many people. Hopefully, I have not forgotten anyone.

  • Austin Bales, for his valuable ideas.
  • Petter Holt Juliussen, for providing server space at the early stages of development.
  • Gavin James, for his technical help with Drupal.
  • Waldemar Kornewald, for his valuable technical support.
  • Urias McCullough and Curtis Wanner, for helping out with the migration of content.
  • Zumi, for creating nice icons for the site.
  • Stephan Assmus, for creating great looking artwork.
  • All the admins, for providing great insight, and for putting up with my marketing rants for the last several months. :-)
  • The Haiku community at large, for their patience.

To finish, I can't emphasize enough the fact that we are a community based project, and that as such, we rely on the contributions of volunteers that want to see Haiku progress. The website is no exception. This new website is just a little step — hopefully in the right direction. Use it as a tool to inform yourself, to interact with other members of the community, and also to promote Haiku. This is just a start: let's make it even better.

Help needed: Web Design

News posted by admin on Sun, 2006-08-06 04:00

Please help us create a nice theme for our new website which is based on Drupal, a popular community-oriented content management system with emphasize on navigation based on tags and relations instead of a static page tree.

The website's structure is already in place (it's what you see in front of you). All we need is a nice theme.

You may add a smaller quick-links navbar for some of the main navigation entries (e.g.: Donate and Contact), but you are free to use any scheme you like. Try to make navigation as easy and obvious as possible.

In addition to the above requirements we have a little wish list for our theme:

  • CSS-based
  • use relative font size, so your theme behaves well on browsers with bigger default fonts
  • use an easily readable font (hint: sans-serif) and font size (not too small)
  • highlight the active navigation entry
  • professional look (we don't want BeOS window tabs in the navbar ;)
  • it would be nice if your theme looked good on widescreen displays (use the available screen space effectively), but it should also support 800x600 resolution

You will probably want to use the Haiku logos in our repository. Please submit your work including a screenshot to the Haiku mailing list.

Why Drupal?

Some of you might wonder why we suddenly changed our mind about Plone and RailFrog. Well, Plone hosting is too expensive because Plone is very resource-hungry and requires a powerful server with root access. RailFrog is progressing too slowly for us and we do not want to wait for the perfect CMS, anymore.

Also, when we tried to create the page tree for our website we faced a few limits because some information does not fit into only one category and our content will have to appear in many places on our website. For instance, article posts (newsletters) may at the same time be tutorials. As mentioned in the first paragraph, Drupal has a few interesting navigation concepts and it allows our users to get involved in content creation which is exactly what we need.
