General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

Just discovered Haiku and I'm hooked already !

Forum thread started by KingTrode on Tue, 2010-05-25 15:16

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One netbook to use for my hobby "Commodore VIC 20" cross development.

It came with windows XP pre-installed, but I have never been a big fan of the OS - and looked at other options that could meet my needs.

Web browsing
Commdore VIC 20 Emulation (VICE)
Decent programmers editor with syntax highlighting
6502 cross assembler.

I tried Ubuntu linux, very nice - but VICE was always crashing and I couldn't get to bottom of it.

I looked at what other platforms VICE was available for and saw BeOS listed there so off I went browsing.

This eventually lead me to the Haiku site, got pretty excited at what I saw :D

So I downloaded the latest build and created a bootable USB installer for the Aspire One.

Made some space on the HDD for Haiku and proceeded to install - quite painless and all went well.

Updated my GRUB 2 bootloader to add Haiku along side WinXP / Linux.

Booted up into Haiku - the speed of booting up impressed me straight away, and those gorgeous looking Icons.

Off the bat my WiFi didn't work but with a quick browse of the forums here revealed the answer - and a quick switch over from WPA to WEP security on the router and it kicked into life.

Spent the next few hours taking a tour of the OS and reading the Welcome / user guides to familiarise myself with things.

Downloaded BeVICE 2.2 installed and ran - worked well and no crashes :D

Have yet checked out things on the Editor with syntax highlighting yet, but I'm pretty confident that this base will covered by a package from the repository.

I also spotted somwhere that DASM Assembler is available, though I've not had time to follow up on this.

I also checked out YaBasic, very impressive as I don't have much knowledge of programming languages other than 6502/z80 assembler and BASIC - so this will come in handy when I need to write some additional crossdev tools/utils for my VIC needs.

I had a few crashes here and there and the built-in Webcam and Mic don't appear to work, but I can live with that for now.

So it's looking good from my end for me to potentially migrate over to Haiku full time sometime soon.

Anyways I have waffled on quite a bit, but here's a big thumbs up from me To Haiku and those involved in it's on going development - great work :D

BTW this was posted via Haiku using Arora Web Browser (I prefer WebPositive but I had a few probs with it going to sleep on me).

PageFlip -- Game Kit Demo Example -- obtaining sync

Forum thread started by mb2 on Tue, 2010-05-25 08:28

Would somebody(s) more familiar with Haiku's Game kit be interested in helping run through a test on Be's sample source for the PageFlip, that a dear friend JBQ wrote? The code compiles perfectly on Haiku -- just it has trouble with obtaining proper sync.

http://www.magicbox.net:88/video/PageFlip.zip

There seems to be something not quite right about obtaining sync from the screen so that the code can run.

In Haiku:
Here's one question -- For the Intel GMA graphics driver how does one set the total graphics memory to be reserved for the graphics card? The prior BeOS settings for graphics memory was set in /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/ixxx where xxx was the chipset name.

How is the same accomplished in Haiku?
Back to the sync issue... any comments?

WebPositive r515 For Alpha 2

Forum thread started by tonestone57 on Sat, 2010-05-22 21:48

Seems that Stippi (Stephan) updated WebPositive to version 515 for Alpha 2. This version will not work on newer, Haiku trunk builds - use other version linked below for that. Instructions below how to download it. Rename your old WebPositive folder to avoid losing it.

http://haiku-files.org/files/optional-packages/WebPositive-r1a2-gcc4-x86...

unzip to /boot/ for normal install.

Haiku starts normally installed in a virtual machine. Why not start when installed on real hardware?

Olá, Descupem my ignorance, people. Following: I do not have experience in manipulating operational systems, to put I am curious. At the moment I am using the Haiku in one VM, virtual box I teethe of Windows XP. I obtain to initiate, to sail in web, and obtained to send and to receive e-mails, to make downloads etc, however I am a little frustado therefore I installed in hd and I did not obtain to initiate exactly creating an entrance in the Grub as recommended. It would like to know if until the launching of the Final R/1. the Haiku will go to have a way of proper start without having necessity to only install in set with another one, therefore it would facilitate that individuals with little experience could try the system and consequentimente to increase the base of users.

Haiku: Media Centre OS

Forum thread started by stellarpower on Mon, 2010-05-17 19:10

According to my computer magazines, those of you who have large televisions and HDMI cables all over the place may well have a whole computer dedicated to your telly. These Media Centre PCs create a difficult challenge. The computers must be able to output high resolution graphics and surround sound in realtime, yet must also be silent, cool, cheap, and relatively small in size. I know many people have said that it would be great if Haiku were focused on media editing and the suchlike, like the BeOS, but what if we also ensured that it could meet all the needs of the blu-ray fanatics? It's a pretty large market.
