Cheap, light, solar netbook and Haiku?

Forum thread started by nonne on Wed, 2009-08-26 01:14

I found a netbook that runs on solarpower, weights 1,5 pounds and cost less than 180 dollars:

Are there any plans to support the processor architecture that's inside that netbook? I think that Haiku would be the only OS fast enough for that kind of hardware.

Performance

How is the performance of Haiku compared to BeOS? I know it's not even alpha yet but I'm still curious.

HaikuWare.com and BeBits.com?

Forum thread started by achmafooma on Thu, 2009-08-06 18:55

I noticed that BeBits.com has been down for at least a week, maybe longer. I also noticed that HaikuWare.com is down.

Then I did a whois search on GoDaddy (which is the registrar for both domains) and both have EXTREMELY similar entries. They are both protected by 'DomainsByProxy.com' (to protect their contact info), and both have their own unique domain servers in the same style.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on with these two sites being down for so long?

How to kill the haiku project

Forum thread started by bbjimmy on Sun, 2009-08-02 17:20

The Let's become root! [ was: Re: Berlios? ] thread on the development mailing list is a very dangerous idea.

This would place all of the haiku on-line presence on one server. This is the only way that I can see that haiku could die. Imagine the source code repository, the bug tracking system, the mailing lists and the Haiku website all going down at once due to a catastrophe at the hosting company, loosing all the data including 100gb back-up.

This could kill the project. We must to insure that no one server or service has all of our data and back-up data.

The God, Haiku and the BSD Daemons.

Hello, my name is Eugenijus-Jonas, or Eugene-John in English. I'm live in Vilnius, Lithuania. I'm a catholic.
Some months ago I had tried Haiku and found it very attractive. I even wanted to install it as my desktop, but when next version had not booted from USB flash, I has decided to wait. But I am liking it and have hope, that in some days (not so quick of course) it would can be most widespread desktop OS on the market.
But exist some disturbance - its dependence on BSD. Is it possible to change driver subsystem to Linux for example or something you'd like (I'm not a programmer)? Fact is that mascot of all BSD's is the Beastie, or the Daemon, or the Devil, and they (BSD's community) depend on Him and He flaw all business. I think it is not a problem, when some drivers are in other licence or even binary form - just no BSD, no Devil.
And another question. Is it possible to include in Haiku philosophy, that you believe in God?
What do you (community) think about it?

Eugenijus-Jonas.

BeIA prototype web tablet needs a good home

Forum thread started by timothy on Thu, 2009-07-23 15:20

When Be assets were sold I bought one of their BeIA development web tablets. It has been sitting unused for the last three years and perhaps someone here would like it. Great memento of Be as there are only a few such tablets in existence.

No idea about the battery life but don't expect it to hold much if any charge. The original stylus was missing when I bought the tablet but a generic stylus works fine.

I can provide photos or additional descriptions if interested. Being quite rare I'd like to get $250 for it.

What will be the advantages of running Haiku?

Forum thread started by admin on Mon, 2009-07-13 01:29

I have a couple of computers that I use for various activities throughout the day (and sometimes night), so I'm always keen to learn about new developments and a new OS is certainly intriguing, but what will set this one apart from, say, Ubuntu?

I've been using Windows XP on one computer and it serves me well, while on my other computer I have Ubuntu, which also serves me well. I'm not a particularly "techy" kinda guy, so from reading about on the site, I've only really come across a lot of jargon and general talk about Haiku.

Would like to hear some thoughts on why people will want to switch to Haiku. How exactly is it going to make the average Joe's life easier?

Thanks.
