Buy the BeOS source?

Forum thread started by mikedoth on Wed, 2008-02-20 21:47

I'm a huge Blender3d fan, a couple years back NaN (the company building the program) went out of business. The user community along with the head developer descided to buy the code. They put a counter on the homepage and within months they purchased and owned the code and now Blender is Open Source and huge. I was wondering if this is something folks see as possible? I'm sure it would help speed up the development. What do you guys think, is this possible?

Big Picture

Forum thread started by larry77 on Sun, 2008-02-17 22:57

Dear All,
I am no computer expert at all (I used to use windows until a few years ago, now I am enjoying Debian due to the large number of applications and to the fact that I finally spend more time working than doing system administration!),
I am intrigued by what I read on Slashdot
http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/12/1431245&from=rss
I am in no rush to try out Haiku (I would not even have a spare box for it right now), but I think I am missing the big picture.
Haiku is written in C++ and the idea is that it should not be pieces of software grabbed here and there but a whole coherent OS, isn't it?

How to open or what to do with the .image files ?

Forum thread started by chiller4ever on Sun, 2008-02-17 19:23

Hello, i am new here and i am interested in this project. But, i have some questions: 1. What are the .image files from the build factory ? which programm can handle them ? and 2. Where can i get the source code for the nightly builds ? I would be happy about a fast reply, thank you.

Networking not working under VMW Fusion

Forum thread started by kainjow on Thu, 2008-02-14 18:05

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I cannot get networking to work under VMware Fusion. If I try pinging a domain I just get back "unknown host". Pinging a site's IP address doesn't work either.

Under Preferences > Network I have a 192.168.0.* address.

Any ideas?

Haiku for Scientific Computing

Forum thread started by larry77 on Wed, 2008-02-13 13:34

Dear All,
I got in touch with the Open Source community due to my interest (for job-reasons) in scientific computing.
I am currently using Debian Linux since it provides me with tons of programs/languages for science. I would like, as soon as I have some time, to give Haiku a try. I understood it is not Linux and that it is aimed at simplicity and I find the idea intriguing.
For my job, I daily use the following tools
(1) R http://www.r-project.org/
(2) SciPy/Numpy http://www.scipy.org/
(3)Matplotlib (pylab) http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/
(4) emacs
(5) Fortran 90/95
(6) ESPResso, a package for molecular dynamics relying on C and TCL.
(7) visual Python http://www.vpython.org/

Is there support for an embbed distribution of Haiku?

Forum thread started by dlockamy on Wed, 2008-02-13 02:28

I've had an interest for some time now in an highly reconfigurable operating system that can be retargeted for specific platforms through little more than a a few configuration options and a rebuild, much as Apple has now apparently done with OS X.

As a long term fan of BeOS (I'm a proud owner of my original r4.5 and r5 disks) and follower of Haiku I've long expected someone to mention a similar system for Haiku. The build system is already setup in a way that would make it simple enough to do this. It seems that it would be a matter of developing some additional interfaces for the most part. For example once the WebKit port is farther along there could be a web based replacement for DeskBar that could be used for kiosk or perhaps set top TV boxes.

The Haiku name

Forum thread started by Alanex on Thu, 2008-02-07 00:12

Curious about the name choice, it's a lovely word, but is it right for an OS? I *could* see me not using the OS because of it's name.
Like I said it's a nice word but I can't/don't know how to pronounce it. As a self employed Computer Technician it's bad enough trying to promote Linux without giving all 3 (in my mind, Lee-nux, Lie-nux, Lyn-nux) possible ways of pronouncing it.

My attempt at pronouncing it would be hay ku (hay rhyming with may and ku rhyming with two). Which, here in Scotland, would sound like I'm trying to catch the attention of a Cow.

It may seem petty or shallow, but I just don't like the name. I love the project however, I loved BeOS and any attempt to recreate/improve it is a great idea.

Well done.

Alan.
