General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

Modularity of application packages

Forum thread started by HaikuForever on Mon, 2014-02-24 11:12

Hi

Does the recently introduced Haiku Package Manager support modular, self-contained applications? By this I mean applications whose files are ALL hosted within their own directory (instead of being scattered all over the filesystem, as is the norm in the *nix world). As a parallel case to this I have in mind Windows' portable applications (although these are usually not tracked or managed by any package manager) or TinyCore Linux's self-contained extensions.

I vaguely remember reading that Haiku does support this feature, or that it was planned.

I would be thankful if you could tell me whether this feature has already been implemented, and how it works.
Thanks in advance to all of you, and kudos to the developers.

ppp question?

Forum thread started by khallebal on Mon, 2014-02-17 15:09

hi all
is the ppp source code found in the haiku srcdir in any working/usable state? if so,how can i build it?
running jam -q ppp doesn't seem to produce any binaries, same thing if try to build one single compnent (ex:jam -q modem),all it says at the end of the jam process is "1 target found".

GoBe Productive on Haiku

"GOBEProductive - Do I have a quote? No. Have I spoken with GOBE Software and a Sr. Haiku developer? Yes. GP is not open sourced but there is a possibility of a Haiku port. I'm hoping this will inspire some positive discussion and a new efforts here."

"In May 2008, when I was still heavily involved with the Haiku project, I had discussions with Bruce Hammond of Gobe Software that lead to a concrete offer from him to give Haiku developers the opportunity to work on a Haiku port of Gobe Productive 3; in exchange for the development work, Bruce committed to make the resulting Haiku binaries available for free.

In response to Bruce's generous offer, several Haiku developers of stature volunteered to work on the port, and they were given access to the code, but for some reason the project never went anywhere. It is kind of disappointing that nothing has materialized after more than two years, but maybe there is still hope.

Yes, I know who the developers were (four, if my memory does not fail), but it's up to them whether they want to come forward or not. You could always ask on one of the Haiku mailing lists.

BTW, there was no money involved whatsoever; the agreement was that the devs would do the work for free and Gobe would release the GP3 binary for Haiku gratis.

I have no idea on the state of the code; that would be another question for the devs, which they may not be able to answer as they were unders NDAs."

What ever became of these discussions?

SFML Support in Haiku

Forum thread started by vyal on Tue, 2014-02-11 11:33

Hello I am building a multi platform proprietary game based on managing nations of Imperial Age (Cira 1760) where you control one of great powers of time- British Empire, Maratha Empire, French Empire, Spanish Empire, Dutch Empire, Russian Empire, German Empire, Ottoman Empire or Qing Empire (Manchu) and lead it to glory.

My Game Engine uses SFML and the lanuncher use wxWidgets. I have implemented a small subset of wxWidgets I use, based on Haiku API.

To compile latest SFML I need cmake and following libraries
pthread
opengl
xlib
xrandr
freetype
glew
jpeg
sndfile
openal
Are they available under GCC2 Hybrid or GCC4 hybrid?

A personal information manager (often referred to as a PIM tool or, more simply, a PIM) is a type of application software that functions as a personal organizer. The acronym PIM is now, more commonly, used in reference to personal information management as a field of study.[1] As an information management tool, a PIM tool's purpose is to facilitate the recording, tracking, and management of certain types of "personal information".

Sound familiar?

Forum thread started by vidrep on Thu, 2014-02-06 22:39

Why I quit: Linux kernel developer Con Kolivas stated:

If there is any one big problem with kernel development and Linux it is the complete disconnection of the development process from normal users. You know, the ones who constitute 99.9% of the Linux user base. The Linux kernel mailing list is the way to communicate with the kernel developers. To put it mildly, the Linux kernel mailing list (lkml) is about as scary a communication forum as they come. Most people are absolutely terrified of mailing the list lest they get flamed for their inexperience, an inappropriate bug report, being stupid or whatever. ... I think the kernel developers at large haven't got the faintest idea just how big the problems in userspace are.

As a user, and not a programmer/developer, I must say I have seen a little of that here as well. If Haiku is to succeed, especially with our small user base, then we really must try to avoid the scenario described above. There is no bigger turn off to a new user (or an old one), than being looked down upon by the programming snobs whenever a suggestion is made or a question asked. Thankfully these experience are few and far between, but they do happen sometimes.

Haiku are on crisis

Forum thread started by skarmiglione on Thu, 2014-02-06 05:21

I believe haiku is obviously on crisis and we can help it to get out of there, but we should speak about it, i believe between many things a list

one can be use bitcoins to receive donations for contracts how an alternative way,

other opinion is think in the new computers and rethink the interfaces dont look so anachronistic i love many things of this interface but i really know it lack other things,

we need more programers, more programers and pay more attention on social networks, really this Os can be a real alternative for linux windows or mac but need some help really.

Html5 and flash plugin (gnash)

dont be close we need more help.

I follow this project from 2008 and have hope on it, but day by day i look how my blog for haiku are with less readers and how the news on my feedly from haiku blogs are less and less, what are the real problem, you can note it? what can we do? what can i do?.
