Printing from ThinkFree Office under Haiku

Forum thread started by danboid on Sat, 2015-05-30 20:26

I updated my Haiku install to 49214 today and I noticed that the JDK also got updated to 1.7_u80_b32-2 so I thought I'd give ThinkFree Office another go and - behold - I now have a pretty complete office suite running under Haiku! Unlike last time I tried TFO, I can now actually see and edit documents under both Write and Calc! :)

I say 'pretty complete' as I've had to postpone any celebrations as I've been unable to print anything from TFO. I have configured my (gutenprint) printer under the Haiku printer prefs and printed a test page but when I try to print anything under TFO I'm told:

"There is not available print service. You must install printer first"

Has anyone got printing to work under Haiku TFO? I was thinking I might be able to work around this by exporting to PDFs and then printing the PDFs but PDF export isn't working for me either:

"There are no fonts can embedding in your PDF file. Verify your font file"

I've reproduced the grammatical mistakes in the error messages btw! :)

New Haiku t-shirt

Forum thread started by pemdp on Sat, 2015-05-16 14:59

Some years ago I ordered the Haiku LW2008 golf shirt from Caffepress.com. I wasn't very happy with its quality. The fabric was kind of transparent and the printing was poor. It ended up forgoten in my closet.
I am now considering printing my own shirt, one that I would actually use. My inspiration is the boot screen and the result would be similar to the image below (with all the icons lit): http://www.customink.com/designs/proofs/krj0-00a3-gqde/front-big.jpg?wat....

ROS (Robot Operating System) creates limited edition t-shirts for each release. I think this is a neat idea to celebrate milestones and bring some extra income to the project.

Open-sourcing Refraction image editor

Forum thread started by Akuji on Thu, 2015-05-14 09:55

You might remember Refraction image editor (http://www.xentronix.com/products/software/refraction) which once was considered as 'Photoshop Lite for BeOS'. Last time it was updated around 2005 and after that the development stopped. There were news about the rights being sold to yellowTab and then Magnussoft but these companies also never continued the development. I've contacted the developer, Frans van Nispen, regarding open-sourcing Refraction and here is his reply:

"The cost to be able to opensource it would be around 10.000 Euro’s. That would cover the cost to update the licensing, double check the code for any licensing issues, deal with our former associates, etc…

This does not cover our intellectual property, nor the cost of development, though we would be willing to donate that part to the Haiku community. Meaning that if you can raise the 10k by crowd funding, we will opensource it."

What does Haiku community think of it? Is Refraction still important as native BeOS/Haiku software and if yes - is it possible to raise requested sum? AFAIK all other BeOS native image editors (Becasso, Artpaint etc.) have been abandoned much earlier and even being open-sourced they don't have feature-parity with Refraction (and sadly nobody contributes to them it seems).
