Bring it mainstream

I love this OS
Have been a follower since it was supposed to be the new Mac OS.

Alpha 4 running great on my old laptops to give to the kids. Fast, easy to understand, etc.
But the lack of Youtube video or FLV support makes this a - put the laptop back in the closet thing.

While in these forums I have read 'propeller heads' argue pro and con about java and flash or whatever... I don't think YouTube is going change a billion videos next week.

If my kids cant use it, and I cant give it to my elderly mother - than this is just a virtual pleasure exercise. It feels good but gets us nowhere.

Games and erotica have driven this industry since I started in 1980, with greenbar printouts of playmates in ASCII that you had to view from 20ft away.

Frank Lloyd Wright said "Form follows function" - Do that, and this OS is a winner over anything I have seen in the Linux distros.

Full indexed search?

Forum thread started by Paradoxon on Tue, 2014-02-04 13:15

Just a question... what happend to the project wich should have brought full indexed search to haiku?
The Last information i found was:

https://www.haiku-os.org/blog/general_maximus/2009-07-31/full_text_index...
and
https://code.google.com/p/haiku-beacon/source/browse/#svn%2Ftrunk%2Fsrc%...

What is missing here to finally include this project completly into haiku??
Any Plans to enable this feature in a newar future?

Haiku Power Management

Forum thread started by Premislaus on Tue, 2014-01-28 10:39

Recently I read another Haiku review (in Polish language).

http://blog.techvortal.pl/index.php/2014/haikuadalovelace-pierwsze-wraze...

Power consumption in a laptop - Lenovo IdeaPad z580:

  1. Haiku hrev46767 gcc2h: 9,24-10,30 W
  2. Linux without Bumblebee and latest kernel: 18W
  3. Windows 8.1 without Lenovo software for power management: up to 23W

Haiku has disabled the wi-fi card , bluetooth, second graphics card and webcam, due to lack of drivers. The backlight was highest in Haiku. I think the difference in watts results from this. But Haiku has rudimentary support for ACPI. It looks nice.

Missing Preferences Options

Forum thread started by fmh on Mon, 2014-01-27 19:50

After many years away from BeOS and Haiku I decided recently to give Haiku a try again. Setup went fine on a real old HP ePC PIII 933mhz with 256MB of RAM. I like installing on real hardware over a Virtual Machine.

I went to do my usual First Thing custom settings I normally did on BeOS under Haiku and these options I can not locate.

1: The Menu Preference. I change the default ALT Key setting to CTLR Key for Menus and Programs.
2: The Services Tab in Networking. I turn on FTP Services so I can get programs onto the machine easily.

I couldn't figure out if SAMBA was under Haiku or if there was a WON equivalent under Haiku. Basically how do I connect to a Windows or Mac machine on the Network to transfer files.

Where do I find these under Haiku?

Thanks

Tilt OS VS Haiku

Forum thread started by Linuxgamer94 on Sun, 2014-01-26 09:15

I have seen the web site and it looks neat. How ever it still uses haiku's shell. I thought that it would be useing KDE 2 or some thing. Aperently it has its own pacakge system and a linux like file system. It noticed that they don't have any downloadable iso's ether and that you have to use a "kit". I was woundering what the diffrences between Tilt OS and Haiku.
