BeOS System font

Forum thread started by alexdyas on Fri, 2013-10-11 09:39

Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I'm looking for the original BeOS system font. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I used BeOS back in the day for a couple of years and loved it. I've since been using OSX, but I'd really like to have that font to use in Terminal.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

What's the plan for touch-based devices?

Forum thread started by Narnio on Wed, 2013-10-09 23:00

Hi folks,

What if any consideration has been given to the suitability of
HAIKU to touch-based devices like tablets and phones?
These seem to be the future of personal computing, if not workplace computing.
A few of these devices use Atom processors, like the FonePad 7 from Asus,
which is a 7-inch phone, and their upcoming FonePad Tab 6.

See: http://www.asus.com/Tablets_Mobile/ASUS_Fonepad_7_ME372CG/

I've spent a few years coding for iOS and I am firmly of the
opinion that an old-time desktop UI should not be adapted
to the touch-only realm, as some people in KDE-land appear to be trying to do.
Too much needs to change as one goes from mouse-based to finger-based UI's.

Phones present a special problem because the GSM drivers
are usually closed-source binaries intended for Linux/Android, but
there may be a few phones out there that can be done with FLOSS
GSM drivers; I'm reminded of the OpenMoko project.

Cheers.

HAIKU on Macbook Pro 2010 15"

Forum thread started by Narnio on Wed, 2013-10-09 22:14

Hi folks,

I thought I would give a report on how HAIKU works on the Macbook Pro 2010 15". My model number is A1286.

1.
The alpha4 disc boots and initializes but when it reaches the desktop it only shows a blue screen with a white bar across the top and a mouse pointer. Which is to say, it freezes.

2.
The nightly ISO is a different story: It boots, initializes, and the desktop populates with all the usual stuff. Looks good...
Problem A: The touchpad works OK, but tapping seems to be disabled, and I can run programs. The touchpad's pointer speed is set too high.
Problem B: The Wifi does not work, but the Broadcom chip is identified as a networking device.
It normally requires that firmware be loaded for it to work.
Thus overall HAIKU nightly seems pretty stable. It would be usable as a daily OS for web browsing if the Wifi were functioning.

I'm pretty impressed and I truly desire an alternative to Linux and OS/X but the lack of Wifi is a deal-killer. If you want I can get you a PCI listing from Linux to clarify what my laptop has.

Cheers.

Package Management merge gets noticed!

Forum thread started by ddavid123 on Wed, 2013-10-02 08:51

There is a post on OS News about the merging of Package Management branch into master. It it a portion of the PM merge post by bonefish last week. The post ends "Onwards to beta 1." While I think more work needs to be done before beta 1, I agree beta 1 is the next logical step!

Please support the BeOS/Haiku Q&A site proposal at Area51

Forum thread started by congusbongus on Wed, 2013-10-02 01:18

I've created a proposal for a Q&A site for BeOS and Haiku users and developers here: http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/60601/beos-and-haiku

Please support it by voting for it, upvoting good questions, or asking good example questions. If the proposal gets enough support then it may become a Q&A site that's part of the StackExchange network!

What is Area51?
Area51 is StackExchange's system for proposing new Q&A sites.

What is StackExchange?
StackExchange is a large network of Q&A sites, where users can ask questions, answer them, vote and discuss them, across a wide range of topics. Its most popular site is StackOverflow which is used by many many developers worldwide, and for many it's their #1 technical resource. Other sites in the StackExchange network are also great resources for finding answers.

Why should I support a BeOS/Haiku Q&A site?
I believe that finding answers to BeOS/Haiku problems is difficult, especially for those not part of the existing community and familiar with its resources, such as the forums or mailing lists. The StackExchange Q&A sites are incredibly useful as questions are very easy to find, in a well-structured and moderated format. It can also provide more visibility to the Haiku project.

Porting Linux window and tiling managers to HAIKU

Forum thread started by hello on Tue, 2013-09-24 18:07

I was wondering how can one port Linux window managers to HAIKU. I am fairly good at writing ports from my experience with Gentoo and BSD. But I don't know what would need to be changed, so I tried to look for some porting documentation but could not find any.

I was thinking of getting e17 and maybe bspwm and xmonad over to here.

Was there any ever attempts to get different window managers over to HAIKU. I looked at HAIKUWARE and could not find a section of ports.

~Thanks for reading this.
