General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

Python users in Haiku

Forum thread started by HaikuForever on Mon, 2013-08-12 16:45

Is there an active Python community in Haiku? The few posts mentioning Python give the impression that this language is not much used in Haiku.

What is the current status of Python in Haiku? And what are the prospects of a Python developer on this platform?

OpenGL!

Is there any driver (and its respective GPU) that give full support for OpenGL? I would like to work with OpenGL in Haiku!

Invitation to BeGeistert 027

Forum thread started by humdinger on Sat, 2013-08-10 18:28

Hello everyone!

Being in the event calendar on the top left of the Haiku front page for about half a year, it surely isn't a surprise: We'll have another BeGeistert conference from September 13th to 19th. That includes the Coding Sprint week where all interested programmers can work together in a concentrated effort. The actual main BeGeistert event is of course as always on that week-end, early arrivers can use the conference room as of the evening of Friday 13th.

As usual, the event takes place at the Youth Hostel in Düsseldorf/Germany which also offers cheap and decent accommodation. Registration is now open at the BeGeistert website, you'll find more information there and in the Haiku event calendar.

With the package management coming along so nicely due to the currently running contracts, this BeGeistert may mark Haiku's transition into beta stage. Join us in celebrating and heaving its big lump over the last hurdles!

Regards,
Humdinger

Pleasantly Surprised

Just tried the latest Alpha4 via USB stick. Worked perfectly first go, with an ASRock AM2+ Mobo, and Phenom II x4 @ 3.6GHz. Speed was staggering, and full-HD video was very watchable with default player (@60% CPU on all cores) :)

The only thing that didn't work was my PCIe SATA3 adaptor (connected to SSD).

Please inform me if you know of an ASMedia SATA3 driver appearing for Haiku!

Cheers.

Contract Updates?

Haven't been any updates on the two ongoing contracts since June 11th. Would love to see an update.

Any tips for running Haiku on my laptop (Z580)?

Forum thread started by ksiazkowicz on Tue, 2013-07-30 15:30

Hello!

I'd like to go back to developing applications for Haiku (maybe finish one of my work-in-progress projects finally, lol), testing and stuff, but I have a slight problem. I've bought a new laptop few months ago. I guess it's awesome, but unfortunately, not compatible enough with Haiku. No Wi-Fi, touchpad works partially, no power management at all (no CPU scaling, fan controlling, brightness adjustment etc.), sound is sorta supported, but won't detect my headphones and always uses internal speakers, no support for booting from GPT etc. Most of the issues are already on the buglist, I guess.

So, running Haiku on real HW just makes no sense. I tried running it in VirtualBox, but it's unbelievably sloooow. Of course, assigning more cores to VM just makes it worse.

My laptop is Lenovo Z580. Variant with Core i7-3632QM CPU.

The question is, which VM would be the best for running Haiku in it, what are the best settings to make it actually so blazing fast as on real HW (even my old PC runs it much better...), etc. Anything, that can help me get it usable here.

Is there any way to change Yahoo Mobile to Yahoo Desktop in WebPositive?

Forum thread started by kp3ft on Sun, 2013-07-28 19:55

I use Yahoo mail for my email, but In WebPositive, Yahoo loads the Mobile version. Is there any way to get it to load the Desktop version? I've scoured the internet and found solutions but they were for Firefox and Opera browsers. There is no option on the Yahoo page to switch between Mobile and Desktop. The Mobile version is very annoying, so often I just reboot into Linux to check my email, but that's inconvenient and I'd rather just use Haiku all the time. Thanks for any help.
