General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

youtube etc? and which browser.

Forum thread started by belfasteddie on Thu, 2013-03-14 19:00

Hi, just installed Haiku to a flash drive and must say gobsmacked at the speed. Would like to ask which is the best way of watching youtube etc.
I used ubertube and whilst very impressive it was slightly iffy getting it to work, considering how easy it is on other operating systems,( not to be construed as a moan ).
I would prefer to use the native browser ( I managed a work around to get my Xmarks to work ) but would appreciate other viewpoints. I ask because previously ( over 12 months ago ) I found Firefox to be unstable.

Eddie

General support for video + network (Eth/wifi) + internal/external drives?

Forum thread started by nereus on Thu, 2013-03-14 13:22

Hello

I'd like to run Haiku off a USB stick for:
- data recovery, when Windows no longer boots
- banking operations, in case Windows has some hidden viruses. As for web-based viruses (XSS, etc.), I don't know how secure it'd be to use the browser of an lesser-known OS like Haiku

Because of this, I need to know how well Haiku supports all the devices out there, whether it's video, networking (Ethernet and wifi), and mass storage devices (internal SATA/PATA and USB-based).

I assume Linux supports many more devices, but is Haiku good enough for such use?

Thank you.

Localizing Haiku for other languages?

Forum thread started by nereus on Thu, 2013-03-14 10:13

Hello

I just ran Win32DiskImager on Windows to create a bootable Haiku USB stick, and it booted up just right on my laptop.

I was pleased to see it could mount the NTFS and ext4 partitions I had on it.

For non-English speakers, I was wondering if there were plans to translate the desktop so that Haiku would be available in languages other than English.

Thank you.

Installing Haiku on a flash drive?

Forum thread started by Prince_of_Light on Wed, 2013-03-13 15:56

I thought I should put this in here since I'm not having a problem per se, rather that I'm trying to confirm if what I'm asking is possible. What I need to know:

1. Is it possible to install Haiku onto a USB flash drive? If so, how?

2. If installing Haiku on a USB flash drive is possible, can it be installed with persistence, or not? If so, how?

3. Is it possible to install Haiku using a distro of Linux? I ask because I plan to partition my flash drive using Linux and have both partitions bootable, one using a mini-linux distro and one using Haiku.

4. If installing Haiku to a second partition is possible, will the BIOS recognize both it and the first partition as separate and bootable?

This is about as clear as I can make my questions, so hopefully it will suffice. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Oh, something else I should mention. I plan on using Haiku mostly as a backup OS. If I use it from my flash drive, will I be able to access any hard drives on my PC while connected? If so, how?

Also, how much space should I leave for Haiku's install + applications if I can manage to get the partition thing to work?

New Qupzilla (web browser)

Forum thread started by Giova84 on Tue, 2013-03-12 17:54

Hi Guys,

Today i have ported/updated Qupzilla for Haiku at the last available (official) revision: 1.4.0.

For those who don't know Qupzilla, try it: is fast and modern, it also has support (different from Web+) to storing passwords, has an adblock filter, user agent editor, do-not-track, rss reader and much more.

I'd like if someone could test Qupzilla on Haiku (you need at least Haiku Alpha 4.1) and send me feedback!

Haiku is nice

Hi. Just wanted to tell you my appreciation of Haiku, I just tried Alpha 4 on VirtualBox. It is very pleasant to use and although it may not be yet as capable as, say Windows, in my opinion it is going the right direction and already surpasses Linux. Unlike Linux it feels solid, like a single piece and works fast. Even under VM it feels better than a native Linux install for me. And although what is there may not be the highest tech of today, again unlike Linux, it feels polished for what it is and feels like it was done with love and care, not to fight the evil proprietary software. Keep up the good work.

LyX - Ported but with issue

Forum thread started by Giova84 on Wed, 2013-02-27 23:34

Hi,

yesterday i've also succesfully ported LyX - http://www.lyx.org/ - on Haiku.
Start fine, you can import and save documents.. But it crash every time that you click with mouse inside LyX. It crashes with a generic "SIGSEGV signal caught! Sorry, you have found a bug in LyX..."

I guess for some bug in Qt.
Any idea?
