General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

We need bebits.com back!

Forum thread started by caleb on Sun, 2015-05-03 14:20

It is a pitty that we dont have bebits.com anymore... It was full of BeOS apps, very well organized and designed, each software with a description, screenshots, comments and rate, including top lists and information about the authors of the apps! It was very, very useful! We really need it back! It is a great tool for the BeOS/Haiku community... There was a lot of work and years of contribution from many users.

What can we do to have bebits.com back again???

MAME and USB joypads under Haiku

Forum thread started by danboid on Thu, 2015-04-30 21:42

Has anyone managed to build MAME, AdvanceMAME or any other version of MAME for Haiku? It'd be great to see it in the depot. The official MAME makefile includes 'support' for Haiku as a build option but I've not been able to get past the first file before I get a fatal error.

I've tried archive.org's Internet arcade under WebPositive and Qupzilla but it failed to work under both.

I've noticed DOSemu is in the depot so we should be able to run MAME under that but I'm not keen on running and emu under another emu if it can be avoided, especially when its open source and claims to support Haiku.

Does Haiku support USB joypads and joysticks to get the most out of MAME etc?

Time to start moving and stop waiting for things to change.

Since it is now obvious that BeBits and Haikuware are not comming back any time soon, lets start sharing all those files you downloaded from there.

1 get BeShare ( not the one in haikudepot, it is badly broken.)

http://fatelk.com/beshare-2.28-1-x86_gcc2.hpkg

or

http://fatelk.com/BeShare2.28.zip

2 assemble all your great booty in your shared folder.

3 launch BeShare and sign in to one of the servers.

This is a stop-gap, We need someone with the Server and skills to assemble all those files for a replacement repository.

Land of the Leaves project (and fork progress)

Forum thread started by apgreimann on Sun, 2015-04-26 23:38

Hello, again, all.

Outside of the "Computer Compatibility List" which I and others here have contributed to, it's been a long time since I last created a post on here, as I have been busy working. However, I thought it'd be fair to mention a site that I've started and where the fork or distribution (depending on your definition) are currently...

1. "Land of the Leaves" is a site I started, currently at http://sites.google.com/site/landoftheleaves -- (named after being inspired by the "leaf" logo and artwork.) It includes links to eBooks, videos, articles, and places around the Web that talk about Haiku OS, BeOS, and derivatives. I also mirrored/copied the Computer Compatibility List post there, since its status as a document hasn't been approved here yet. However, the site is still incomplete; I still will see about screen captures, guides, and credit for various models once I have extra time, as they are missing right now, and intend to give it a domain soon as well. But it's here for you, me, or any other individual that loves Haiku and Be history.

2. The design process for the/my distribution has mainly consisted of months of questioning and researching how it should work and behave, in being both modern and yet well-designed, while holding a hinting reminiscence of the past. As I stated last Fall in another thread, it will have a refreshed look and feel, a new icon set, a web shell, and several innovative accessibility features built in. I know that many here are Be purists, but I have resolutely decided I will release a "hybrid" Gnu/Linux edition alongside the "pure" edition to boost hardware support. I have found during testing that Haiku does not yet run on newer machines I've played with, including the HP Stream 7 and the 11.6" notebook, even with legacy boot options on. By providing a hybrid release, it may help solve and accelerate this, if at least temporarily. My original goal was Christmas, after which I gave an estimate of March-April. After seeing this month (4/2015) is over, and that there are still areas to complete, I have decided to set the official release date to Saturday, May 30, and will do my best to meet it with at least a public beta. I'll be honest: I don't know if VLC or Firefox will be in it, but I do hope to eventually have those running someday as a goal. But this is not vapourware, I'm really working on it, and it's really coming.

Thanks for reading! Peace, all.

What happened to KOffice and Scribus?

Forum thread started by danboid on Sun, 2015-04-26 12:28

Hi Haiku users and devs

I've not tried Haiku in a few years so I thought it was time to try it again.

The major new feature to have arrived since I last tried Haiku is Haikudepot. I was pleasantly surprised to find LMMS - one great Qt app that I didn't know had been ported to Haiku - but disappointed there was no KOffice or Scribus in Haikudepot.

Why not? Bit rot? Do they now require a newer Qt than Haiku has available? I suppose those who aren't happy with using Google Docs , Office 365 etc will have to wait for a Libreoffice port.

Haikuware

Forum thread started by Haiku_Programmer on Tue, 2015-04-21 16:11

Is it just me or is Haikuware down?

Every-time in the last week that I try to login I get:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Or is it something I am doing wrong?

R5.03 from a long time ago to now..

Hi everyone :-)

Can't remember when, but just before Be Inc went belly up, I was rather active in the BeOS community. To those that remember me, a very harty G'day. :-)
Anyways, it's been many, many years since any form of BeOS was installed on any of my hardware. Things change, people move on.. Etc..
Then last night, after the kids were in bed, I actually sat down and downloaded the alpha 4 and burned it to a USB disk.. Intrigued, I booted from the stick and wow... Instantly I was transported 15 years or so back into the past.. :-)

I can't believe what a great job you guys have done so far.. Un believable... :-)

Very very impressed..

I'll be keeping a closer eye on what goes on here at Haiku from now on. :-)

To all the people who have had/have anything to do with this project, my hat off to you.

V.
