Analysis of Haiku GUI: Part One

Forum thread started by rixard on Thu, 2013-01-10 08:41

I have stumbled upon many posts, both here and netwide, that suggests that the Haiku UI is outdated and lacks the graphical flair of Windows, OSX and Linux. I also see this discussed regarding other systems, such as AROS, MorphOS, AmigaOS4 etc. After some intense thought, which did produce a lot of heat and smoke rising from my poor, overworked brain, I present to you: Haiku GUI: or how old can still feel fresh. Part One

Nvidia/GFX support

Forum thread started by xsive on Wed, 2013-01-09 20:24

Haiku is now in alpha 4 which is great, I still don't have wifi because there is no freeBSD support yet, is there no work being done on the Nvidia drivers anymore? This is the only other thing that doesn't work in Haiku for me (doesn't work as in I have a pathetic resolution). I'm using a GTX 560Ti

Thanks

Haiku as fast router, better than Linux, BSD?

Forum thread started by batot on Sat, 2013-01-05 21:36

I have a little question about super speed core.
Has anyone tested the speed HAIKU as a very powerful router?
We are happy to found out how Haiku fell with his super fast compared to the core Linux and BSD?

What about portability of Linux software for Haiku?
Is the source code of the Linux source such as the GCC compiled BeOS HAIKU will work without changing the code?

HAIKU software

Forum thread started by trojan on Fri, 2013-01-04 12:44

was just curious as to what sort of software you will be able to run on HAIKU? i.e will it have its own games, apps etc. Or will it run linux or windows software?

missing libraries for running Softmaker Office

Forum thread started by tatamata on Tue, 2013-01-01 07:53

I have used Puppy Linux for years on my netbook.
Now, while preparing a separate partition for installing Haiku, I ruined linux partition, by mistake (my wife distracted me in critical moment:-).
Therefore, now I have Haiku only on the computer and I want to give Haiku chance to become my primary OS.
One thing preventing me to do that is lack of an office suite.

Since I have a licence for Softmaker's Office 2010 suite for Linux, I tried to install it.
Apparently, installer installed the suite in my /boot/home/office2010 folder but executables can't be started, because the following libraries are missing:

libX11.so.6
libXmu.so.6
libXext.so.6
libm.so.6
libXrender.so.1
libc.so.6
libdl.so.2

Is there a way to find these missing libraries, for Haiku?

Thank you in advance.

I can't tell you how many distros of LInux I went through trying to get an old Dell Inspiron 1420 up and running. Broadcom 43xx wireless driver install failures. What a pain in the butt. The only one I got running was an old version of PCLinuxOS...which broke immediately upon update. I remembered seeing Haiku while poking around the Internet a while back and thought about giving it a try. The install was simple. The wireless didn't work, but the fix was an easy line or two at the terminal while on a wired connection, followed by a reboot and viola! Wireless works.

Now here is what I don't understand. How is it that so many Linux distros that want to be approachable to beginners make it so darn hard to get wireless drivers installed and running? Haiku made it pretty simple.

Well I thought I'd throw that out there. Otherwise, I wish Haiku much success. It brought my 1420 back to life.
