A Haiku Installation System Layer Proposal

Forum thread started by hydexon on Fri, 2012-11-30 21:51

Hello, just a new Haiku User. i'm simply Freepascal/Lazarus newbie developer with a proposal: a Haiku Installation System Layer.

How works?
The Haiku Installation Layers works likely Windows Installer (MSI), Haiku Installation Layer can handle dependencies, show a simply wizard, and install the software, are pacakges with the .hip extension (Acronym of Haiku Installable Package). I propose this because everyone's wants a Haiku a easy-to-use operating system, no another linux-way to install applications.

How i can do it
I'm not familiarized with C++, but yes with FPC (Exists an Port of FreePascal Compiler for Haiku), just i need to know how to register apps in the Haiku Apps Menu, Creating Icons in the desktop, and the directories where is correct to install applicaitons.

If i want create a Package?
Just the tools are a simple compiler shell, and user-friendly INI-Files, don't complex with database tables, complex projects, organization, etc.

Just that, thanks for reading and sorry for my english!
Greetings from the El Salvador, C.A.

Haiku Security

Forum thread started by vidrep on Fri, 2012-11-30 15:14

Many years ago I came across an article that investigated the security vulnerabilities of the BeOS.
I have located the article (link below):

http://www.giac.org/paper/gsec/175/security-beos-media-os/100651

Since Haiku is being developed from scratch, I feel now is the best time to address any security related issues and implement them into the operating system. I'm sure some of these issues have been addressed, but would also like further information on what the developers plan going forward in subsequent alpha and beta releases.

Native CD/DVD burning app

Forum thread started by vidrep on Mon, 2012-11-26 22:18

Currently Haiku is lacking a good CD/DVD burning application, though there are several in various stages of completion or abandonment available on Haikuware and BeBits. Is there a plan to include a CD/DVD burning application as part of the official release? If so, it is essential that it include support for all of the most current formats including CD, DVD and Blu-Ray.
Some applications I have used in the past and had various levels of success with were BurnItNow!, JABA, and Helios.

The owner of JABA (developed for Zeta) posted this recently:

I have the sources (and the rights) of JABA, the ZETA cdrecord frontend written in yab. However, it was written with yab version 0.2.4 and it needs quite some adjustments for yab 1.5, and some new icons and graphics too. Any volunteer who wants to help with JABA for Haiku is welcome to do so.

Maurice Michalski, who created the Helios app retains the code. Is it possible to obtain the code so as to resume development?

BurnItNow is still being developed by Scott McCreary and is Beta 5.

Is Haiku the Media OS?

Forum thread started by vidrep on Mon, 2012-11-26 19:05

From the "Be Book" : "...since BeOS is the Media OS..."
If Haiku is indeed a reimplementation of the BeOS, then we need to focus on making it the Media OS, rather than worrying about word processors and spreadsheets. Haiku will never be the OS of choice in an office environment, nor should it be. Neither will it supplant UNIX based systems as the choice OS for a webserver. I believe we need to stick to our "roots" and concentrate on finding a niche where it excels (multimedia), and making Haiku the OS of choice for people who work with audio and video files, as well as being a killer gaming platform. Haiku HTPC?
I have been a BeOS user since 1999 and was greatly disappointed when Be went under back in 2001. Until the Alpha 4 release I had lost hope. Now I'm excited again for this platform and would hate to see a repeat of the BeIA fiasco which is what ultimately killed Be.

Running Haiku from logical partition?

Forum thread started by jigzat on Sun, 2012-11-25 02:49

Is it possible? I want to quad boot but the other partitions are used by Windows FreeBSD and ArchLinux, I could ditch ArchLinux but if it is possible I could keep it.

Haiku Awareness?

Forum thread started by Blublaze94 on Sun, 2012-11-25 02:08

So, I've been following the Haiku project for almost 2 years now, and I frequently check the website to see what advances have been made since the last time I did so, but something I have noticed is that there isn't much documentation on Haiku in general. This website does a GREAT job at keeping people interested informed on what's going on in the Haiku world, which is great. But! I feel Haiku would get a lot more attention if more things were widely available to the public. If you go to YouTube right now and search "Haiku", you're going to get about 50 results, most of them dating back at least 2 years or more. So my question is: Would anyone be interested in helping me publicize Haiku a bit better? Some tutorial vids and such on YouTube, and articles, basic how-to's. As of right now I am in my second semester of college. Majoring in Network Security and Electronics. I know very little C++ and will be taking a class on Java next semester. My hopes are to be able to port software to Haiku, as soon as I learn to be able do so. My biggest problem is, there isn't a lot of documentation on the topic. Let's change that! If anyone is interested in helping me further my knowledge on Haiku and/or BeOS and helping me out with the task of putting Haiku out there, then PLEASE! Respond to this post or contact me at:

Haiku 4.1 Actually Works on Parallels 7

Forum thread started by jigzat on Sat, 2012-11-17 02:52

Hello everyone, I purchased months ago Parallels 7 moving away from Virtual Box, but unfortunately Haiku never worked. Some people said "you know just download Virtual Box" but it wasn't an option, I didn't purchased Parallels to use yet another virtualization software. Anyway I tried booting from the ISO but it does't work It just stays there trying to load the OS into memory I guess.

Then I read a post in the Parallels forums about someone complaining that networking wasn't working on Parallels 8 but since I am stuck at 7 (didn't qualify for free upgrade for 1 month :'( ) I downloaded a demo of Parallels 8 and the Haiku .image and used this instructions :

bunzip2 haiku.image.bz2
dd if=/dev/zero of=haiku.image bs=1024 count=1 conv=notrunc seek=408600
mv haiku.image haiku.hdd

then created a new virtual machine with that hard drive and to my surprise it boots Yay! now I wen't back to Parallels 7 and after two failed boots it is now fully booting even with USB and network enabled.

I have to try to do the same instructions straight from Parallels 7 and try to do some internet browsing. Funny thing is that a couple of days ago I ordered a PC just to Install Haiku on it, and it is now in transit to my house.
