What apps do you need on Haiku?

Forum thread started by kurtis on Sat, 2012-06-23 20:33

Hey Guys and Girls,

I'm just trying to get an idea on what apps people need on Haiku. Feel free to include ideas such as applications from other platforms (e.g. Firefox), or just general application types (e.g. Spreadsheet Program). Also, if there's an application on Haiku that just needs updated because it no longer runs or is missing feature X, then that would be a great addition as well.

If possible, let's keep the discussion to a minimal in this thread and treat it more like a list. External links and little notes at the end of your posts are welcome. Please try to stick to one post per user. If you need to modify your list then simply edit that post.

Keep in mind: The point behind this is to allow potential-developers to have a quick list they can run through, evaluate what people want, and can use this knowledge to build applications that will be more beneficial for the community. I don't have any idea on what most people use Haiku for so choosing an application that would be well worth the time is a guessing-game at best.

Thanks!

My List:

  1. Emacs
  2. HTML5 Browser
  3. Official Package Manager

Notes:

  1. Emacs has been ported by augiedoggie but he mentioned it was an older release
  2. Work has already been started on porting webkit by aldeck
  3. There's some various methods of currently distributing packages. From this developer's mailing list thread, it appears there's some work to be done in this area, still. I'd like to see a decision made on how Haiku, from a central aspect, plans on handling package management and get this system (even if it's crude) implemented.

Changing an Icon - Howto

Forum thread started by el.tigre.20 on Fri, 2012-06-22 16:58

Hello,

Can anyone, tell me how I can change the icon of any program/file on Haiku to an image (.ico, .png etc) of my choice?

Thanks so much!

Ok how about a Haiku Alpha 3.5 instead of waiting for 4

Forum thread started by Trodfoot on Fri, 2012-06-22 13:47

Here is why I am suggesting this. I have been telling other IT tech friends about Haiku and a couple have given it a try. But they didn't ask me what image to get so the got the Alpha. Well to say the least they were wondering what drugs i am on as of course the Alpha does not have the functionality/hardware support of the nightlies.

So why do the Devs not just call a cut off at say nightly 44242(current one as of this msg) and make a Alpha 3.5

It seems STUPID to have people install the current Alpha and then come on to the support forum to only be told DON'T USE the alpha go get yourself the newest nightly and then add additional packages(that have names but no info on what they are). I understand there 8 items left to get an R4(so far, more could get added) but I hate having to tell people that "oh don't use the Alpha, search for the nightlies and use the newest one and oh by the way you have to add these optional items before you can really try Haiku out"

The Haiku GUI

Forum thread started by el.tigre.20 on Fri, 2012-06-22 05:50

Hello,

I am wishing in the near future to start writing some software for Haiku.... I've learned python, and I am now in the stage of learning c++. I've spent countless hours wasting time trying to figure out what is the best language to program software that has a supported GUI in Haiku...

The python that comes pre-installed on Haiku doesn't support tkinter, so I can't write a piece of software with a GUI, and I don't know if the C++ GUI is supported or if it is even a good idea.

When programmers [for Haiku] write software, what is the GUI written in?, is basically my question... and is there somewhere [In Haiku] where I can find the source code?

Thanks. I hope this post makes sense... it is very late.

Cheers!

Unsupported vesa mode for trident cyberblade i1

Forum thread started by mtit on Thu, 2012-06-21 20:20

I own an old compaq evo n110 . The gfx card is a trident cyberblade i1. The Haiku boot process is blocked because of it and even the safe mode isn't able to force. I tried to install BeOS Pro 5. It worked but in black and white. I looked at bebits and found a vesa patch that worked. From the BeOS partition I dd on a separte partition an Haiku iso image following a posted article on booting. I used makebootable. I tried to copy the trident driver at /system/add-ons/kernel/driver/bin but Haiku still don't want to boot.

I know this is certainly not à focused target machine, but it is for now the only Intel Pc I have. I ported a few time ago the gnuplot software. I want to coninue but it won't be possible easily if I do not succeed to install Haiku on this old compaq.

Can you help me or make the next release able to boot with a trident cyberblade i1?

Thanks for considering my request.

PS: even on that old machine BeOS rocks surprisingly fast! I hope that Haiku Would be also that efficient.
