Animated haiku logo...

Forum thread started by Luposian on Mon, 2012-03-12 20:48

In reading the latest news concerning the AmigaONE X1000's new "start up sound" (which is utterly awful, in my estimation), I got to thinking about the start up sound I created, awhile back, for Haiku. It was done, with the mental image of the three leaves of the Haiku logo drifting down from above, and falling into place.

If anyone is interested in helping realize this "promo", let me know. I will send the MIDI sample for incorporation into the animation.

Haiku Live CD fails to post beyond initial post screen rev.43844 nightly

Forum thread started by jgray on Sun, 2012-03-11 15:41

Hi there,

not sure if this the correct area to post this in & whether or not someone knows about this already, but recently the Haiku Live CD has stopped posting past the initial boot screen/freezes on all boot icons lighting up. This fault appears to have been introduced relatively recently. The last version of the nightlies that I managed to get to post had some garbled video-mode upon booting into Haiku Live CD (Radeon ATI HD5770). (438## ?)

I've tried the latest rev.43844 on both an X58 chipset motherboard/I920/ICH10R and a Hp8510W laptop/intel t7700/ICH8m/intel 965m express chipset, and the freezing occurs on both systems.

Please ignore this post if everybody already knows about this. I just thought everybody probably does their testing using VMs these days and maybe not the ISO live cds, so maybe the fault isn't showing up in a virtual enviroment.

cheers
john.

Connecting The Community

Forum thread started by shaka444 on Sun, 2012-03-11 15:26

Back in the day, any time I needed a quick answer to a problem in Be, I would log into BeShare and there was always someone there to help. It is great for newcomers and the community in general to have this. BeShare works flawlessly in Haiku, and it's a great way to centralize communication, get more users comfortable with Haiku and speed up development- you can share files, links etc..

BeShare is available here:
http://haikuware.com/directory/view-details/internet-network/chat-irc/be...

Also listed on the page are links to JavaShare and Ozone (QT based) which allow users on almost all platforms to connect.

Haiku Web Masters:
Could we include BeShare in the Optional Packages? And just to make it even more newBe friendly, have it automatically connect to the default server (currently beshare.TyComSystems.com ) at startup?

Also list it under the Community page..

Setting up Vision for IRC chats

Forum thread started by shaka444 on Sun, 2012-03-11 13:26

I need help setting up Vision for Haiku IRC chats..
It keeps saying "Could not create connection to address and port." the port is currently 6667
How do I check to see if port is open, available etc... or change port if need be?
-shaka

p.s. While I'm at it, couldn't we set things up by default to connect to Haiku chat so newcomers could get involved/get help right out of the box (like BeShare)? When you click on the irc link on the Haiku page, WebPositive/Firefox don't know what to do with it...

p.p.s.. After doing a little research I found that you can connect with BeZilla browser using Mibbit.com http://cbe004.chat.mibbit.com/
Enter a user name where it says "Nick:" and for "Channel" type #haiku and click "Connect"

Hope to see you there!

gcc version

Forum thread started by erm67 on Sun, 2012-03-04 14:53

Hi, I am new to haiku, I just tested it for a few days, compiling it from source. It is a very nice system so I am planning to use it for a while, at least .. I think it has a future, there is nice community and is already usable.
I am still testing and reading around but if I got it correctly the first official release (R1) for x86 will be based on the ancient gcc 2.95 to keep binary compatibility with BeOS/ZETA software and distributed only in binary form, while future releases will be gcc4 based. For non-x86 platforms instead only gcc4 build are supported.
Also on x86 is possible to build haiku with gcc4 but it is not 'officially' supported.
That is why my first builds were gcc2/hybrids, I also tried a gcc4 hybrid, just to see how did it perform. Currently trying to compile haiku on haiku with gcc2 fails with some internal gcc errors and I guess that since probably noone is going to fix gcc 2.95 sources, the problems will be fixed by workaround in haiku sources to avoid compiler problems.
This made me wonder if it makes sense to build and use a gcc4 (maybe hybrid), ok, it won't be possible to use old binaries and software from haikuware distributed without sources, but that is not a big problem for me, basically I spend most time programming and browsing the internet and I don't have any old binaries to run...

What are the pro and the cons of using a gcc4 haiku on x86 (beside binary compatibility with old programs)?

windows 8

Forum thread started by xsive on Sat, 2012-03-03 20:30

Maybe with the recent reviews on Windows 8 consumer preview and its unpopularity with users maybe its time Haiku upped its ante? Time for 'the alternative' OS to shine?

creating bootable ISO from existing BeOS Pro5 hd install?

Forum thread started by kp3ft on Mon, 2012-02-27 16:29

Hi all,
Sorry if this isn't directly Haiku related, but it is indirectly.
My old BeOS Pro 5 installation disc I bought from Purplus 10 years ago is hopelessly deteriorated, and I can't find any more to purchase that aren't extremely expensive. I have been using the BeOS Max editions, but they are buggy. I recently discovered an old harddrive which I had installed the BeOS Pro on, and it works great in the computer... much better than the MaxPE3b or 4b editions! Is there a way I can back up that installation to a bootable CD so I can re-install BeOS Pro 5 in the event my only existing installation gets corrupted? I'd like to be able to install it to any computer, not the same one, so I'm not even sure if it's possible to do what I'd like, since the existing installation is obviously set up for the specific hardware of the computer.

I have no idea of the legality of this, so if it's breaking the law then it's off limits. I just don't want to lose the original BeOS Pro 5 I bought, now that I rediscovered it, in the event my harddrive crashes or if completely it up when installing new software. I certainly don't dare to try the USBpatch to get it to see USB flash drives, until I've backed it up somehow.
Thanks for any info
