Haiku on Android

Forum thread started by lxstoian on Mon, 2012-01-30 11:24

Hello folks.
Someone on Xda-developers managed to port bochs to the Android platform, and it can boot Haiku.

I have tested this on the only android device I have around the house , namely my old xperia x8. This is a first gen device with 160 ram and a 600 mhz arm v5 cpu. I get all the way to seeing the pointer on the screen and being able to move it but then it locks up my phone.
Anyone with a phone/tablet that has 1ghz or up cpu should run this pretty decently.

So I created a zip file with Alpha 3 and everything you need to get this running.

Just unzip it to the root of your sdcard. It should be something like /sdcard/SDL /sdcard/Bochs2_5_1.apk. Install the apk and run it. That should be it.
On my phone it takes around 10 minutes to see the mouse pointer , but then again any newer phone has several times the processing power of mine, not to mention more ram. So you probably should see the desktop in less then 5 minutes.

There is no need for root.
The screen works as a touch pad , volume buttons are left and right click.

This is something to try out just for the fun of it. Don't expect much functionality.

I'd like to hear how it runs.

Here is the zip. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6739631/haiku%20android.zip

Zotac Zbox Boot Problem

Forum thread started by c.pergiel on Sat, 2012-01-28 21:03

Background: I bought a Zotac Zbox a few months ago and installed Ubuntu. It's been working pretty well, but I don't like the direction Canonical is heading. It might be the right direction for them, but I don't like it. Then I heard that Be was back, and that Roland was using it, and I thought this could be just the ticket.

Problem: I can't boot from the optical disk OR from a USB stick. I booted from a CD when I installed Ubuntu, but now it won't. Zotac Support has not helped.

Background #2: I wanted a machine that was ready to go. I have done my share of screwing together computers, and I am not interested in doing that anymore, at least not for this project. The machine came with 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. It's the new style with brushed metal cover and the built-in optical drive.

Has anybody run into this problem? Were you able to solve it, or did you just throw your Zbox in the trash? I've found all kinds of comments around this problem, but none close enough to help.

Traditional Chinese Input in Haiku (Alpha 3)

Forum thread started by Demian on Mon, 2012-01-23 17:26

I was wondering if there is a way to input traditional Chinese characters in Haiku? I know there already exists a method for Japanese. At the same time I doubt about the existence of a programme for Chinese (traditional) input?

I am a Linux (Fedora) user and currently use IBus 1.4.0 for writing Chinese (traditional) using Bopomofo.

I am not a programmer or an expert on computers, therefore I would appreciate if you could keep your answers as simple as possible but no simpler.

Thank you all for reading and caring to respond! :)
我謝謝你們!(^_^)

How to run a php script from Terminal

Forum thread started by Texcor on Fri, 2012-01-20 16:37

Hey there,

I'm new to this operating system which we will use sooner or later for our radio automation system.
I have a php script that takes the current song info and sends it to our streaming provider.

How can I run t this script under Haiku? I've come across is: http://araneum.koppin22.com/doc-haiku-inst.html

I guess that's a requirement in order to run a php script right? But how can I run is script from a terminal window though?

Thanks in advance guys

Threads and mulitcore processors.

Forum thread started by seagoat on Wed, 2012-01-18 22:28

I do not profess to be a either a hardware or software expert. I know Haiku is threaded OS. And I know when I run Haiku on my single core Atom there are two virtual cores. When AMD realised its "cheap" 6 core and then recently its "cheap" 8 core there was talk that most software couldn't make use of all those extra cores. But I am right in thinking that Haiku would just soak up (as needed) and exploit all that extra grunt because of its architecture. Not sure what you would do with all that extra power.
