Help secure 1,000 EUR for the Haiku Support Association

Forum thread started by humdinger on Fri, 2011-10-21 07:21

Hello there!

As you may know, the "Haiku Support Association e.V." (HSA) is organizing the regular BeGeistert meeting and the associated Code Sprint. We may engage in other activities to further Haiku development in the future, if anybody has a good idea, helps with its implementation and we have the necessary funds available... *)

Speaking of funds... we could need everyone's help:
Urias McCullough made us aware (thanks, mate!), that there's a program of the German DiBa bank that awards the top 1,000 German registered societies 1,000 EUR each. It's determined by vote, and that's where the Haiku community comes in.

UPDATE:
The voting is over. Alas, we didn't make it in the top 1000. With 1,595 votes we only made it to rank 1,827, while we'd have needed at least 7,902 votes for place 1,000... Anyway, thanks everyone for your support!

If you want the HSA to be among the top-1000 you'll have to:

Geekport support in Haiku?

Forum thread started by macsociety on Wed, 2011-10-19 18:16

So, since Bebox had the cool Geekport, and BeOS supported it, does Haiku support a special port like this and in a similar manor?

Or is Geekport gone for good?

Kind of like the new AmigaOne X1000 coming out has special access to XMOS, kind of to me a geeky port accesible for folks to tinker with, similar idea.

Would be cool if Haiku had something like this.

Would the BeOS Bible & other BeOS books be helpful for Haiku?

Forum thread started by macsociety on Tue, 2011-10-18 02:31

Like the title states, would the BeOS Bible & other BeOS books be helpful for Haiku? Are they close enough that reading the BeOS Bible for example will help a user better understand Haiku?

Why should I switch from Ubuntu to Haiku?

Forum thread started by Crockeo on Mon, 2011-10-10 19:57

Hello the Haiku forums, I recently came upon your (seemingly) wonderful OS from an xkcd comic (I forget which one, or I would post it). I've been reading around, and Haiku seems amazing, but slightly unstable. So I'm wondering if the users on this forum could possibly tip my scale in either direction.

To help you, this is what I do on my laptop:

-Code in C/C++, Java, and occasionally python.

-Browse the web

-Do homework and the such

So based on that, what could sway me into installing Haiku?
I understand that people on this forum might be biased, but I just want your opinion.

Thank you
Crockeo.

Planning to buy an Acer Netbook PC!

Forum thread started by ddavid123 on Mon, 2011-10-10 19:20

I am thinking about purchasing an Acer Black 10.1" AOD257-13473 Netbook PC. It has an Intel Dual-Core N570 Processor, 1 gig of RAM and 250 gigs hard drive. I am planning to use it exclusively as my Haiku Box. I have a HP laptop, but it is more of a backup in case my main machine goes down.

Does anyone know whether Haiku runs well on it or not? If not, I will be the first to say yes or no! It looks like a great buy, it is only $228 American! I will report back when I get it running or not! In case anyone wants to do the same, the link is below.

Finally have my little HaikuBox (Zotac Zbox+)

Forum thread started by macsociety on Sun, 2011-10-09 03:38

Finally just did the deed and purchased a ready made Atom based PC at Frys today so I could have my own little HaikuBox. Since my Mac Mini did not have sound, I never used Haiku on it. Now maybe with a system hitting on all cylinders, I will use it daily.

The goods news under quick testing, the Zotac Zbox+with the Atom D525 CPU and Intel NM10 Express Chipset with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 GPU for $249 from Frys seems to be working all the way around. Have not played with WiFi yet but I think with Haiku R1 Alpha 3 it might work. Right now I am ethernet connected.

Anyway, I am running R1 Alpha 2 right now installed to the 250GB drive that comes in it. Install goes fine, she boots, I get sound playing some MP3s, USB works, etc... In fact using the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard and a Logitech MX Laser Wireless Mouse connected to a Asus 23" VGA LCD Display.

Something I need to figure out though is after install, I have to leave my Haiku CD in the external USB DVD/CD player in order to boot the system. Without the CD in, I get a message on the screen to hit any key to boot but nothing happens. I then stick my Haiku CD in and I get a boot screen allowing me to choose the CD or Haiku partition I had created. I select the Haiku and she boots to HD nicely.

How can I boot direct to Hard Drive without the CD in the system? Did I partition wrong or something? I did just one partition I think. Would like the system at hoot to go right to HD and not CD to boot.

Anyway, at least I have sound, get on the Internet, and this little system screams. So far I am happy.

Once I get things cleaned up will do some videos.
