General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

Qt port status?

Forum thread started by Polari on Tue, 2011-05-17 05:39

After noticing Qt 5 announced a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the Qt port for Haiku is still alive? The likes of the Calligra office suite, calibre, Scribus and a recent version of VLC would all be pretty handy.

How Haiku does on 64-bit

Forum thread started by apgreimann on Mon, 2011-05-09 20:44

This is a summary of testing Haiku on a HP G72-b43WM 64-bit notebook for fun:

Haiku cannot run the GUI Network settings pane because it crashes (uh-oh!) but it did recognize the screen (much more than I can say for Solaris, and Linux distros that were made for 32-bit.) Plus, the notebook's keyboard and mouse worked right out of the box! I might add booting was a little slower by about a minute, but everything worked! ;)

So, if you were to ask me how Haiku did on 64-bit as an i386 version as a nightly, it did really well! I don't really think Haiku needs an architecture port!

Get Haiku to boot on a G4!!!

Forum thread started by apgreimann on Mon, 2011-05-09 20:36

Hello, guys....

Way back in the past now, I'd asked if booting on an iBook G3 was probable. A few months back, I traded that for the G4 Altivec version. With that in mind, I had a quick question: What on earth would it take to put this OS on it?

Can Haiku be booted from Linux? But, how? Remember, PowerPC uses yaboot, not grub. Now, if someone knows how to map the kernel file and such in grub, I can translate that in yaboot. :)

What about BSD? Haiku borrows from BSD driver stacks and such anyway, so is that possible?

Oh, and, I have tried the CD Haiku uses to pass OpenFirmware--it does not work, as it doesn't fully understand the firmware.

I don't care how I'd get Haiku to boot on here, but I've got to somehow!!!

be-mail daemon, be-pdf, vlc

i was wondering when any of those items would be fixed in Haiku? Also if theres plans to make MediaPlayer have the ability to play audio streams like shoutcast?

Poised For the Future

Forum thread started by xecronix on Thu, 2011-05-05 15:02

How is Haiku poised for the future? What I'm concerned about is how well can the core Dev team keep up with new hardware support? Are there plans for handling this situation? What are they? What type of hardware has priority?

Building Haiku from within Haiku...

Forum thread started by Luposian on Thu, 2011-05-05 07:49

I just built a recent revision of Haiku in Ubuntu and installed it onto a second disk drive on Athlonica via the the Haiku CD I created. It has WebPositive already installed (part of the .iso CD image I created), so I'd like to keep it the way it is.

But since this is not one of the nightly images, it doesn't have the build tools I need.

Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do (or where to go), to get the build tools I need to install in my copy of Haiku, so I can start building Haiku from within Haiku?

I'd be greatly appreciative.

[Idea] Raise funding for Haiku development

Forum thread started by fortheloveofhaiku on Thu, 2011-04-28 00:55

What i am suggesting is using a micro donation / fund raising service like Kickstarter to raise the needed funds to contract developers and get haiku up to scratch with modern day operating systems.

What we need:

- A good pitch : Not one thats harking on about the technical benefits of haiku, they don't care about that. What they care about is unique ideas, so we need a unique pitch.

- A target: Someone needs to sit down and number crunch and figure out how much is needed to hire contract developers to do the various needed tasks.

This is part an idea, part a drive to get momentum behind the development of this project. I hope that we can see this take hold and followed up on.
