General Haiku Discussion

Here you can talk about anything relating to Haiku.

Java (OpenJDK)

Forum thread started by ti.teg.tnod.I on Tue, 2011-04-12 15:10

So I've been following the progress of Haiku for about a year and a half now. I've been intending to develop a lot of user-friendly software for Haiku (probably mostly in Python). I wrote a basic repository for my own needs while I was using Haiku so I could re-install Haiku constantly (Almost every night). The only thing that kept me (and is still keeping me) from using Haiku is the lack of Java support.

For me to properly develop for Haiku I would like to immerse myself in the environment by using it as my primary OS. The latest bit of information about the OpenJDK port is here. Has there been any progress since then? It's literally the only thing keeping me from Haiku. I'm fine porting small things like the wireless drivers I require, graphics drivers, etc (Well I'm getting a new laptop with an ATI card and that might be a bitch...).

I'm just wondering: Is anyone working on the OpenJDK port anymore? If so, fantastic! If not, I could probably find a bit of time to port some code and help out, I just don't understand why the OpenJDK port isn't more active. It'll help increase the userbase and pull in more developers.

Haiku is the only OS birthd from the death of BeOS I see left standing, I would love to see it pick up a little more. I think this could easilly be my all-time favourite OS, please offer me some insight, I find the information for Haiku to be painfully disorganized (I think I'll organize it myself ... It's honestly only the lack of Java holding me back from Haiku)

Cheers,
ti.teg.tnod.I

P.S. Another thing I've been wondering: Is Haiku planning on dropping the BeOS backwards compatability? If so, when?

Once again, can windows work on Haiku; with a Virtual Machine; and interact with Windows files through NTFS-3G?

Forum thread started by MrAccident on Sat, 2011-04-02 22:35

I stumbled upon some reference to a Wiki about NTFS-3G somewhere, and noticed that it's also available for Haiku.
If I understand correctly - this thing makes it possible to have NTFS on other operating systems.
Windows runs on NTFS right? So I've putt 2 and 2 together and thought... maybe it means that it's possible to: install Windows, ReactOS, a portable version of Windows, and some other s*** like that on Haiku.
Putting 2 and 2 together is the only thing I'm capable of doing here; so I'll leave the rest of the conclusions for you guys.

AMD E350 Zacate

Forum thread started by dsjonny on Sun, 2011-03-27 14:58

Hello

Did somebody tried to use Haiku with AMD Dual Core E350 CPU (+chip AMD Hudson A50M)? Can Haiku run on this platform? Is the graphics (ATI Radeon HD6310) works? And what about HDMI?

And another question: is the bluetooth with Atheros AR3011 chip works?
And more one: is there any "speed-test" for SAMSUNG 470 SSD? Did somebody used/tried this?

Thank you for the answers.

Help finding compatible laptop

Forum thread started by ptrlsn on Sat, 2011-03-26 08:58

Hello,

I would like to buy a new laptop that I will use exclusively for Haiku and I need help finding the right one.
I know that there is a hardware database at haikuware, but I have given up on that. It's a complete mess of old hardware that is no longer available and hardware listed as compatible but when you click on it to get more information, it turns out that all sorts of thing about this particular piece of hardware is not compatible.
Anyway, what I'm looking for is a laptop with a 17" (or bigger) screen. Compatible graphics card (no vesa) and sound card should at least do audio out. Also it should have a compatible wireless network card. If CD-burning is possible in Haiku, then the CD drive should also be compatible.
Is this possible? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Peter

i was wondering about the BeFS did it get some upgrades or is it still the same since BeOS R5? Would it be possible to add a native ZFS (Solaris File system)?

Have a copy of "Programming the Be Operating System" available. Don't know if it is relevant to Haiku. Just send me an email to aparsons888@hotmail.com

access real hard disk from virtual box

Forum thread started by haikuRules on Wed, 2011-03-16 03:42

Hello,
I just installed haiku on virtual box, I am really amazed!
I have a slow laptop (800 MHz), and the whole installation toke less then 20 minutes - on virtual box!
The neurons in my brain starts feeling like steel wool just from thinking about the time I installed windows xp - on brand new real hardware! oh my!
And haiku achieves that without scarifying functionality, the other way around! One thing is certain, had haiku been a MS product, than it hasn't been considered alpha 2, but stable version 5.1.2600.

OK, now a small question, it seems that it's impossible to access real HD files from the virtual disk, so, how do I install files that are on my real HD (c:\...) into haiku.

I would like to knew if there will be support for RTL languages (like Arabic & Hebrew)in the foreseeable future.
