Acer Extensa 5420-5687

Forum thread started by DFergATL on Tue, 2010-05-11 00:34

Trying to see if I can get HakuOS to boot on this laptop. I could dedicate this laptop to Haiku, and that is what I hope to do. I can boot the CD and it gets all the way to the red rocket. Then nothing. If i remove/insert a CD I get some activity. I feel that the desktop is right there behind the boot screen. I have tried booting in "safe mode" and "safe video mode" but still can't get to the desktop. Any suggestions anyone?? I wish I could tell you more but I can't find a way to get Haiku to boot in 'verbose' mode, so I don't know much about the specifics.

P.S. Posting from Haiku booted on an other PC using the live CD!!

Monitor Geometry Configuration

Forum thread started by elmusafir on Mon, 2010-05-10 22:26

The Preferences/Screen section in the User Guide indicates the location of the configuration file in

~/config/settings/Screen_data

I assumed it would be a text file but it is not.

Where can I change the automatically recognized 15.4" monitor to the REAL 17" size?

Thanx in advance

Install Alpha2 from Alpha1?

Forum thread started by haikuhacker on Mon, 2010-05-10 20:27

I downloaded the anyboot image. Is there anyway I can install Alpha2 using the image? My Alpha1 installation doesn't "see" my 8Gb blank FAT format thumb drive, then it turns the thumb drive off.

alpha2 problem with connecting to ad-hoc wireless network

Forum thread started by alh84001 on Mon, 2010-05-10 18:32

Hi all.

I waited some months for this release, mainly because I wanted to be able to use my laptop with a wireless connection. I downloaded and installed the alpha2 a couple of hours ago, set up everything (including running the required script), but I can't get wireless to work. The network in question is an ad-hoc wireless network with WEP protection (13 characters ASCII key). I tried setting the network to static mode instead of DHCP but it's still the same. When I try to connect I pass the hex key preceded with '0x' to the setwep command. When I cat the syslog I see the messages from the wireless driver regarding beacons of the networks in range (including my own network). What am I doing wrong? Is it actually possible to connect to ad-hoc networks? (just in case, my network card is Intel PRO 2200 BG)

P.S. One unrelated question. Is the ATI Radeon X700 card supported? When I boot I have to manually choose Safe Display Mode. If not, I get a black screen. This may actually be down to my machine (Asus A6Va) which had an identical problem in Ubuntu, and it turned out that the driver defaulted to use the external VGA output. The solution was to tell the driver explicitly to preffer the internal output by changing the xorg.conf. I can't test that now, since I don't have a monitor around, but is it possible to change that in Haiku? Or at least use the safe mode display adapter by default so I don't have to enter safe mode options every time I boot?

Alpha 2 - General System Error when installing

Forum thread started by civ247 on Mon, 2010-05-10 18:08

Hello,

During the install i get an error like "General system error"

The file it's on when this happens is libwebcore.so but i dont know if this is actually the cause.

I can however boot the live cd to the desktop.

Perhaps related - when I try to launch webpositive I get an error like 'Could not open "WebPositive" with webpositive' - or something like that.

I burned two cds and get the exact same errors.

Also when booting i get a "fatal exception "NMI Interrupt" occured! Error code: 0x0" however i can just exit out of the shell and continue booting - i dont think this is part of the problem.

Alpha2 not booting. Dell Latitude c640

Forum thread started by lalit on Mon, 2010-05-10 15:42

Haiku Alpha1 was working fine in my pc. I installed Alpha2 over Alpha1, it was still working fine. Then I decide to clean up the old system. I just delete and recreate the partition. Then install the Alpha2 to my Dell Latitude C640. It is booting from the CD successfully, installing without error. But not booting from hard disk.

First I created the partition from Haiku disk. It was saying problem booting the operating system. Then I created the partition from XP disk, then initialize it from Haiku with the default options. It is now saying no bootable disk found.

I can use the livecd without problem.

Please help.

Alpha 2 not loading localizations

Forum thread started by oscarcp on Mon, 2010-05-10 15:10

Hi!

As part of the spanish translation team I've just downloaded and tested Alpha 2 and ran into some weird thing...

I've emulated Alpha 2 with Q.app for Mac (Qemu based) and localizations didn't work well. In the language select dialog they went fine, but when loading in LiveCD mode almost 99% of the system is not translated, even the applications.

I've only located translated strings in the "About system" dialog (not the left panel though). Is this normal? I'm gonna install it in a computer this afternoon for testing it properly.
