Booting

Forum thread started by DFergATL on Mon, 2010-05-10 14:59

Haiku does not boot on the following system. It gets all way to the end and then goes to black screen instead of the desktop. If I had to guess I think that something really is running because I get HD acctivity if I remove or insert a Cd or Usb drive. Any suggestions?

Intel Atom 1.6ghz dual core motherboard
512mb DDR2 Memory (Trust me this is enough to get started)
160gb 3.5" s-ata hard disk.
1 x PCI slot for NVidia 5200 PCI 3D card

Alpha 2 No Sound Card Detected in Vmware

Forum thread started by kvdman on Mon, 2010-05-10 14:01

Alpha 2 No Sound Card Detected under Vmware.

I'm under Vmware Fusion on OS X.

All previous versions of Haiku I've tested had sound support under Vmware. You would kind of expect sound to work under Vmware since it worked before, and Haiku releases a Vmware image.

Anyone else with this issue?

*Update, installed optional package OSS > sound card detected but no sound.

alpha 2 - ISO, has an incorrect checksum?

Forum thread started by handy on Mon, 2010-05-10 07:31

I downloaded the new ISO, tried to burn it 3 times unsuccessfully with 2 different Linux burners before I checked the checksum (I know I'm a bit slow) & it is not what is on the download page for the ISO.

I just downloaded the ISO again on a different machine & got the same checksum as the first download image that won't burn.

I am attempting to burn the new download on the different machine.

I'll re-post the results.

If the checksum is correct then you have the wrong one on the download page. If the checksum is incorrect, then there is a bad ISO on all the mirrors, (I downloaded from a different mirror the 2nd time).

[Edit:] The 2nd image seems ok, though NeroLinux crashed when trying to verify it (which is a first). I'll install to HDD & give the result here too.

[Edit2:]
@mmadia: Sorry I didn't get a "Save" button when I try to reply last night to your question? I'm here again this morning & I still don't get a "Save" button therefore I have to edit this post?

Anyway the two mirrors are:

Can't install Gobe 2 in VMWare Haiku

Forum thread started by GotBeOS on Sun, 2010-05-09 16:49

Old BeOS user who found Haiku here.

I have a copy of Gobe 2 and I tried to install it into Haiku which I have running in VMWare. It creates an empty folder for Gobe Productive but fails to install the software.

BTW nice to see BeOS continue on in Haiku. I still use BeOS more for fun than anything else. BeOS was the best OS I ever used. Looked great, ran fast and I did all the things I wanted and needed to do that I could do in Windows or a Mac operating system. Damn shame it went away.

Oh and it would be nice to see Haiku do just the basics, web browsing, word processing and emails. Anything beyond that is just icing on the cake for me.

Looking forward to Alpha 2.

Any ideas why Gobe won't install?

Thanks.

all these missing libs..

Forum thread started by elwis on Sun, 2010-05-09 08:57

Alright, I'm almost spamming the forum but please bear with me, it's only day two in Haiku-week..

So, I've downloaded a lot of apps and not one of them works. They all miss some libs that I guess, I could browse around haikuware to find.
However - this makes me think.
The default Haiku image has like, 10 MB free - they won't fit in there anyway. Will it work installing all these libs on the extra parttion, and if so, how the heck does the system no where to look? Are there any good description of how Haiku actually works and defines it's environment?

I would however suggest to have more libs installed default, it's kind of depressing when none will work out of the box ;)

Day one with Haiku

Forum thread started by elwis on Sat, 2010-05-08 15:51

Hi all,

I've just spent my first day with Haiku in Virtualbox and hade some thoughts. First of all, I'm not an old BeOS user, I did try it out back in the days but I was completely stuck in the penguin crowd at that time. Anyway, I need some new playground and decided to try out Haiku and take a look at Darkwyrms interesting programming tutorials.

However, I have a few question as a regular user, like what program does what and how good is it? I browse around haikuware for example and find some IM clients but have no clue on which one to use, it seem that some of them are outdated but perhaps it's not?

I would love a wikipage or sort of with the alternatives for standard stuff, like office suite, image editing, mesaging etc. I do have a few "must have" applications that I need to get my hands on before I start coding them myself ;)

In Virtualbox, Haiku seem a little bit sluggish (especially Bezilla) put I guess that is Virtualbox only? Maybe I should take a look in the shed and see if I could get some old stuff working..
