GCC and Make

Forum thread started by stellarpower on Tue, 2010-03-23 22:11

Hi there.

A few programs that I've downloaded before have required compilation, and I was wondering if someone could give me a simple, non-OS specific overview of how make and GCC work, and how I can compile programs from source.

Thanks :P

connect to wep protected wireless network from haiku

Forum thread started by cannot think of... on Sat, 2010-03-20 17:03

Um, I recently installed Haiku on a 4GB partition on my hard drive. Aside from the weird random errors that are to be expected from experimental software, it's pretty cool. So I need to connect to the internet wirelessly. I've already got haiku to see my wireless thingy with wirelessconfig and can connect to my essid. unfortunately, my essid is protected by WEP and I've got no way of putting the key in so I can browse the net. I was wondering if maybe someone knew how to connect to a wep protected wireless network? Maybe? Please?

Update?

Forum thread started by dened50 on Tue, 2010-03-16 14:54

Hi, I have looked through and read several Update questions in the forum , but it appears that there is no clear cut way of doing it.

I downloaded the latest nightly update, i.e. Haiku nightly r35864 - x86gcc2hybrid , burnt it to a cd but it failed to boot past the third icon. I then downloaded Haiku nightly r35864 - x866gc4, burnt it and that booted perfectly. I ran the installer and found that my Alpha rc-1 had disappeared and that Bezillerbrowser wouldn't fire up because of a missing : Libstc ++ .r4.so.
I looked around and found someone had found that creating a link from Lib????.so to lib???.so would make it work. I tried that but it refused to write to the file.
I then downloaded the Haikulauncher and was/am impressed with it.

So, my question is , can anyone offer a good way of updating to the latest without losing what I already have?

I see a download that works with VMWare. Does it work for Parallels?

I see a download that works with VMWare. Does it work for Parallels?

I have an old copy of Parallels which I would have to update for $39 or $49. If I get VMWare I would have to buy a new license for $79.

Just wondering which I should do. I also want to run eComStation (OS/2) inside of OS X also (I don't do any kind of Windows).

Dell Latitude X1 - dream laptop for Haiku

Forum thread started by Platsek on Thu, 2010-03-11 15:40

To all of you looking for a real hardware to run Haiku on, I can fully recommend Dell Latitude X1.
Every single component of this machine runs out of the box after Haiku installation (except SD and CF card readers of course).
This tiny 12" laptop features 1.1GHz Pentium M processor, Intel 915GM graphics card, 30 or 60 GB HDD, 1.280 MB RAM (maximum), Broadcom NetXtreme 5751 Gigabit Ethernet, MiniPCI slot for Wi-Fi card (mine uses Broadcom BCM4318) and weights only 1.14 kg! Did I mention that it is fanless which makes him a perfect choice for silence lovers? I have no idea about the prices of this equipment - but should be cheaper than any new netbook currently available - and its 12" screen and full size keyboard makes him much more comfortable in use. I am a total greenhorn when it comes to Haiku experience - but after installation I felt almost like a Mac user - everything works... no problems at all (however I have no idea how to setup wireless networking - but both network cards are detected and visible in Network preferences). Well, that's it - I just wanted to share my experience with running Haiku on real hardware. Haiku seems to fit perfectly this amazing little piece of hardware.

P.S. This post was created under WebPositive of course... :)

done installation but Haiku won't boot from HD

Forum thread started by satiropan on Tue, 2010-03-09 17:02

Hello, I have followed the installation tutorial that I have found on the Haiku site.
I am trying to install it on a Fujitsu Lifebook C6310 PII 330MHz 250MB 40GB notebook
I boot from the cd, do all the installation, extract the cd, turn off thr computer, turn on but no Haiku boot happens, just this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5
GRUB Loading, please wait...
Error 17

and that's all.
What can I do?
