Booting BeOS MAX (or Haiku) with Grub 2 ?

Forum thread started by FA-2 on Sun, 2010-01-17 14:28

Has anyone had any luck booting BeOS PE5 MAX, or Haiku, with Grub 2?

I am using ubuntu linux on the same machine. I was using a version that came with Grub 0.97 (I think) and I was able to boot using the following menu entry:

BeOS
rootnoverify (hd0,5)
chainloader +1

The 'rootnoverify' was required. I could not boot without it.

I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10, which now comes with Grub 2 by default. grub didn't automatically discover the BeOS partition, so I had to add it to the 40_custom file, and run update-grub to add it to the menu. I used an entry just like the one above.

When I rebooted the machine and tried to boot BeOS, grub informed me that rootnoverify was no longer a valid command. I tried changing it to root= but had no luck.

Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

on edit: I am sorry, it looks like I posted a thread that someone else already started. However, the suggestion in that thread did not work for me. :(

Forum thread started by reneManqueros on Sun, 2010-01-17 09:53

Hi, i've been working lately with Bethon and AnyGUI in haiku, at first i downloaded the bethon package but it didn't compile out of the box, so i had to make some modifications to the makefiles, header files, etc for it to work, if anyone else has been having a hard time trying to get bethon up and running i could upload my version of the files for you :D

Problems with Qt apps

Forum thread started by nauska on Tue, 2010-01-12 21:47

I tried to install Qt today, downloaded the zip-file and expanded it into /boot. For all applications I try to run I get the following error message:

"Could not open "" (Missing libraries: libstdc++.so)."

What do I need to do to be able to run Qt applications? I'm running Haiku revision 35012.

Haiku on EeePC 701 - Some questions to other EeePC users

Forum thread started by nauska on Tue, 2010-01-12 11:31

Hello Haiku Community!

I've followed the project and been a lurker at the mailing lists and the website since OpenBeOS begun.

Some weeks ago I downloaded one of the nightly builds and installed at my EeePC 701 and was surprised at how fast it is! Still an alpha release, I'm very happy to say that most things just works!

However, there are a couple of things that I want to ask other EeePC users out there.

1. Has anyone got Haiku to run at 900 Mhz? I can only get it to run in 630 Mhz. I've tried the modified BIOS at http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=69357 but the boot process seems to hang (no error message, just stops) when booting at 900 Mhz.

2. Has anyone got the web camera to work? Using CodyCam I get the error message "Can't connect the video source to the video window".

3. Has anyone got the PowerStatus to work?

Any other tips on how to improve my Haiku experience on the EeePC is very welcome :)

Thank you!

EDIT: Btw, I forgot to mention that I'm currently running revision 35012.

BeMSN working ?

Forum thread started by natgab on Sun, 2010-01-10 03:06

I have Haiku running fine on my computer, no problems with most applications. But I can't get BeMSN to work. I loaded BeMSN, and installed the lib file to the folder. I get the window for the email & password, but after entering information I get this error:

Loaded symbols for /boot/system/lib/libtextencoding.so
[tcsetpgrp failed in terminal_inferior: Invalid Argument]
[Switching to team /boot/apps/BeMSN/BeMSN (3099) thread receive DS (3118)]
0xffff012c in ?? ()
(gdb) [tcsetpgrp failed in terminal_inferior: Invalid Argument]
Undefined command: "". Try "help".
(gdb) [Switching to team /boot/apps/BeMSN/BeMSN (3099) thread receive DS (3118)]
Undefined command: "". Try "help".

Does it work? I tried Jabber4Haiku but it won't load. The two IM clients are the only apps I have installed myself.

Dualboot with two hard drives

Forum thread started by natgab on Mon, 2010-01-04 07:33

I just wanted to post this information in case it helps someone.

Most guides for dualbooting always assume the user is making a 2nd partition, but I think its safer to use a 2nd HD. It can be safer to add a spare or external HD to your computer and not risk your main system, especially since Haiku is still an alpha : )

VirtualBox / VMware / QEMU work fine but don't let you know if Haiku actually works on your system nor can you help out as well in bug reports.

Here is the link to my post in the Ubuntu forums, since I am dual booting with Ubuntu Studio 9.04:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8606667&postcount=274

I will be adding my hardware to the Haikuware database.
