Boot in console mode

Forum thread started by fil on Wed, 2009-10-28 14:40

Hi,

I want to boot Haiku only in console mode, no GUI, frame buffer, video drivers etc.
Can you tell me what I need to change?
Or where I can read about exact boot sequence (can't find anything specific to this).

10x,
Filip

icon labels: problem with some wallpapers

Forum thread started by farvardin on Tue, 2009-10-27 12:24

Hello,

is it possible to change the font color for the icon labels? Since they are white, on a light background it's not really noticable. Is it possible to have them on a different background color so it wouldn't interfere with the wallpaper?

Bootman: Partition Table not Compatible

Forum thread started by Cytor on Sun, 2009-10-25 13:40

Hi!

First, the livecd runs fine here. Installer also runs fine and... installs.

But when I attempt to run bootman, I get the following message: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3835/screenshot1rz.png

Partitioning works fine, tough. I created a BFS partition on the first hard drive (/dev/disk/scsi/0/0/0/raw) and set it active. Then, the installer did its thing and completed without error.
Is this because I have two hard drives in here? Or maybe because they are on an AHCI controller (ICH8-M)? Altough the drives are recognized just fine in DriveSetup. I also booted off an Linux livecd and ran parted to create MBR partition tables for both hard drives.

All this worked fine on an older Dell laptop (no SATA/AHCI, one IDE drive).

My system is an Acer Aspire 7720G (Core2Duo, ICH8 Chipset, InsydeH2O-BIOS, 2 HDDs).

Is there a way to work around that? I really want to try Haiku on this system, too :)

bug ticket #3663

Forum thread started by haikuhacker on Sat, 2009-10-24 16:53

This ticket states:

Haiku fails to boot. The booting process goes fine, until the desktop is supposed to appear, but only the blue background appears and the mouse is frozen, the system can't even be rebooted with ctrl-alt-del.

I am have no clue, whether this is related to the recent directory changes or not. The last revision, which I'm sure that it worked was r29805.

This is a fresh image with no prior file lying around, which might cause trouble.

Failing revision is r29881.

Most likely it is a conflict between the hda driver and OSS. The hda driver has been added to the default image and will conflict with OSS if you have the corresponding optional package installed. Please remove either the hda or the OSS driver from your installation in that case.

Ok, thanks for the feedback!

I am having difficulty getting sound to work with the HDA driver and have submitted a bug #4838 about it. In the mean time I installed a Soundblaster Live sound card in my machine turning off the onboard audio option in the bios setup. Then I did a fresh (formatted new partition) installation of Haiku Alpha 1 from the live cd without any optional packages and got the same results as above on the first boot.

I'm guessing that the installation detected my Soundblaster card and provided OSS automatically along with the embedded HDA driver. So I tried removing the HDA driver from /boot/system/add-ons/kernel/drivers/dev/audio/hmulti and /boot/system/add-ons/kernel/drivers/bin. This doesn't fix the problem for me like it did for stippi, using r29881.

My question is does the kernel always look for the HDA driver because its been added to the default image, even after removing the actual HDA files and will I ever be able to use my Soundblaster Live in Haiku?

Colour band on boot.

Forum thread started by TomMan on Sat, 2009-10-24 11:31

I have just tried the Haiku Alpha LiveCD and when I try and boot it, instead of the splash screen I get a coloured band on the top left of the screen (|red|blue|yellow|green|etc|). I am using an Intel Corporation 82815 Chipset Graphics Controller and I have a 1Ghz Dell machine.

PLAN for Instaling multi-boot WindowsXP, Linux, BeOS and Haiku?

Forum thread started by zblace on Sat, 2009-10-24 10:44

I am planing to install Multi-boot option with WindowsXP, Linux, BeOS (again) and Haiku (first time) on my laptops. For this reason I am curious to hear of informed and knowledgable multi-booters oh what would be best way to do it to optimize invested time, hard disk space and increase levels of compatibility with different systems.

audio driver

Forum thread started by haikuhacker on Wed, 2009-10-21 23:31

I have read that the Opensound optional package might work for my sound card if all else fails, but that I need to remove the default hda driver before installing Opensound. I was wondering exactly how to do this, do I just delete the hda file from the /bin directory? And what about the other audio drivers located there?

Welcome to the Haiku shell.
