How to start a program at startup

Forum thread started by burndark on Wed, 2009-10-21 03:15

How do you get a program to launch at startup in Haiku?

I'm about 80% sure I was able to do this in R5 but I can't seem to remember how to do it nor find it on the Interwebz. Or has my memory gone faulty?

Thanks in advance

any way to bypass "fatal exception "NMI Interrupt" occured! Error code: 0x0"?

Forum thread started by burndark on Wed, 2009-10-21 03:12

First off I want to congratulate everyone who has worked on Haiku to this point. I have been playing around with Alpha 1 for about a week now and enjoying it.

Now onto my problem... :)

OK, so when I boot I get a kernel panic then "fatal exception "NMI Interrupt" occurred! Error code: 0x0". I can bypass this easily enough by just typing "exit" at the prompt and everything boots as normal. The thing is I would like to get this to not occur at all. I'm wanting to set this up my BeOS machine as a headless box that I can VNC into (yes, VNC works...). If I should ever need to reboot the box this of course becomes an issue.

What I'm looking for is any kind of ideas on what fail-safe options might be useful in getting around this, if there is a way I can pass arguments to the kernel when it boots, etc. Any way of getting around it would be helpful.

Oh, I don't know if this matters but I can tell you that this is being caused by the network card. The issue started only after I installed the card. I have not seen if it was resolved after I removed the card but I think it's a safe bet that it would be. Of course I kind of need the NIC so I can't exactly do without it.

Haiku changes active partition when dual booting from GRUB

Forum thread started by plodder on Sun, 2009-10-18 23:16

I have installed Haiku Alpha 1 for dual booting with PC Linux OS via GRUB on an Acer 529ATX laptop. The current setup of the partitions is as follows:

primary partition 1: Haiku Alpha 1
primary partition 2: PC Linux OS

Active partition: primary partition 2
Boot loader: GRUB installed on primary partition 2.

The set up works perfectly and I can boot into both PC Linux OS and Haiku without problems - except for one glitch. When I boot into Haiku, it changes the active partition (boot flag) from partition 2 to partition 1. Thus, on the next boot, GRUB is bypassed, the option to boot into PC Linux OS is not presented and the laptop boots directly into Haiku. If I want to boot into PC Linux OS, I have to change the active partition (boot flag) back to primary partition 2 using, e.g., cfdisk on the Parted Magic CD first.

Is there a way to stop Haiku resetting the boot flag when it boots? I did a quick check on the existing bugs list and also this forum but I couldn't see any mention of this particular problem.

ipro100 NIC Problems

Forum thread started by TheDarkSentinel on Sun, 2009-10-18 16:18

Hello All,

I'm having trouble with my Dell Dimension 1100. I can't seem to get the Intel Pro 100 NIC working. The output from listdev:

device Network controller (Ethernet controller) [2|0|0]
vendor 8086: intel Corporation
device 1050: 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller

I'm pretty sure that means the device is there. The driver seems to load as well when I check the syslog. When I try using DHCP I just get a self-assigned 169.x.x.x address. When I set it to static using either ifconfig or the network preferences utility, the result seems to be the same. The IP will come back fine and route list looks right as well; but when I try to ping my GW I get "No route to host." I can successfully ping 127.0.0.1 and also I can ping the IP address if I assign one (i.e. 192.168.1.11). I just can't ping anything past the NIC.

One thing I've noticed that I think is odd is that the link light greens up immediately and stays that way even if I unplug the ethernet cable. For comparison, when this system had Windows loaded it had no trouble using the NIC so I feel like the hardware is good.

Any suggestions? I've read through the forums and what little similar posts I found did not resolve my issue.

Thanks!

Airport network Macbook Pro

Forum thread started by stefdnk on Tue, 2009-10-13 17:06

Hi,

Just managed to boot in Haiku on my MBP.
But I cannot connect or in fact set up my Internet connection. I am using my Airport to connect and I see no way in Haiku to do it??

Is it impossible at this point?
Or am I just missing the point ;o)

Any help appreciated

Not Able to Boot Unless I Use Both the Live CD and 'Live' USB Pendrive.

Forum thread started by plumtreed on Tue, 2009-10-13 12:03

I have three different computers but I can only get Haiku to boot from a laptop when I have both thr CD & the pendrive plugged in at the start. Otherwise, the CD will boot up to the first set of symbols but then it hangs. The USB dongle just winks when on its own. I stumbled upon this combined concept just minutes before tossing Haiku into the bin!

I can remove the CD once booted and everything will run well and it is persistent to a degree. Haiku
goes quickly for a OS on a USB!

I wanted to outline my 'solution' in case someone else is having difficulty in booting the live CD or USB. This dual act may, as in my case, solve the initial frustration.

I also found that the wired ethernet connects only upon reboot and not when you try to connect from the desktop after boot-up. However, I'm not sure I use the right technique.
