Dual boot Haiku and Senryu? And Nvidia Driver Question.

Forum thread started by The_Serial_Wombat on Sat, 2009-10-03 02:42

Greetings to one and all. First off, I would like to thank all of the people behind this Hoopy Frood OS variant. I have been toying with it for about a year now and since we have an install CD/DVD (instead of the messy Linux install tricks), I have now dedicated 2 partitions on my system (See bottom for full specs) for its use and programming. lol

Now for the questions...
1. I have 2 partitions back to back with Haiku on the first partition and Senryu on the second partition.
Drive Configuration:
/dev/disk/ata/2/slave/0 Be File System Haiku /boot 40G
/dev/disk/ata/2/slave/1 Be File System Senryu /Senryu 20G
/dev/disk/ata/2/slave/2 NTFS

I used the install disk for the Haiku and just formatted and copied the Senryu from a raw image. I have tried to "makebootable" that partition once, but it corrupted my original install. What would be the proper way of dual booting the Senryu partition?

Second question...
I am running an AsRock K8NF4G-Sata2 Motherboard with the onboard NV44 (GeForce 6100) video card. What driver do I need to install for correct running of 3d, etc. (I am using the Vesa drivers and seem to work ok. But I would love to have the correct drivers for programming.) EDIT: Found out that this is an actual bug in the nvidia driver. (Ref #2780)

System Specs:
K8NF4G-Sata2 Motherboard, onboard video NV44 (Geforce 6100) 128M shared ram, 1G DDR288 Ram
HD 1 250G Segate (Windows XP)
HD 2 110G Toshiba (Haiku/Senryu/Network Shared NTFS)
DVD R/W

Solved my boot problems (mostly)

Hello, new to Haiku and new to the forums.

I tried to install Haiku on a new partition on an old IBM thinkpad (T30) and first met with moderate success booting from my installation... I finally wiped the HD and created a single partition and installed Haiku on according to the well written Installation Instructions.

However the system still failed to boot, and I couldn't figure out why since it started fine from the CD. My only greeting when starting up was "unable to find boot volume" or something like it..

Then I remembered the note about Haiku not creating any Master Boot Record at all. So I then proceeded to boot from the CD and pressed Spacebar during the boot and selected the HD instead of the CD and continued booting.
After that successfully booted my HD installation I then launched a terminal and started 'bootman' and created a Haiku MBR and I can now boot without a CD! (yay for me)

However... I still get a boot dialog at startup prompting me to select the only available bootable partition. Is there any way to modify the bootman MBR so it auto-boots my system, without the prompt? I guess I could look into GRUB but it requires it's own partition right?

OS looks very nice, looking forward to play around more with it during the week-end.

Cheers

M

Worried about Haiku writing to HD

Forum thread started by Frank W McCormick on Thu, 2009-10-01 14:55

About a week ago I dl'ed the live version of Haiku - burned it to a disk then booted it up. After playing with it for a while I quit, and rebooted my machine. I was a little worried to discover during the reboot that
Haiku (which had set the time to something other than local time) had been writing to my HD and that because some of what it had written was dated in the future my system had to do an fschk.
Can anyone tell me why and what Haiku found so important it had to write to my HD. I thought the whole point of a live CD was to NOT have to worry about what's on the HD while you try out a new system ??

Touchpad on Acer Laptop

Forum thread started by leaf on Mon, 2009-09-28 13:36

Hi,
I installed Haiku on my old Acer 1640 series laptop. It boots fine but the touchpad is not working properly. It doesn't work, and at times when I try to move the cursor with it, the mouse randomly clicks or r-clicks. The touch-buttons also don't work. The wifi also doesn't work, but since the stack is still experimental I'll wait for that.

Getting past the boot screen from the livecd

Forum thread started by kelean on Mon, 2009-09-28 02:01

I can boot the haiku live disk.

I have to push space bar to get the boot menu.

I can select the correct monitor setting.

Start the machine booting.

Watch the icons light up.

Then when its all done the screen goes black.

It come back on and then does nothing. Except for the fans pick up speed like the processers are maxed out.

I have a dell opti-plex gx-280 with a gig of ram with intel 915 graphics.

Any idea whats going wrong?

Anything I can try?

Thanks for any help, kelean.

IM kit avalablility

Forum thread started by vootele on Sun, 2009-09-27 16:46

Hi, I'm trying here to get MSN working, but no joy so far. BeMSN is ancient and doesn't connect. IM kit should work, but there's some files missing (GPL protocols) The link on the BeBits is broken and HaikuWare doesn't also have it. Official homepage seems not to have any files at all...
Why not merge IM kit into Haiku source code tree?
