VLC player!

Forum thread started by dened50 on Sun, 2009-09-20 14:33

Hi, I was looking at youtube ( I was using Linux ) and came across a haiku demo and was surprised to see several versions of VLC player on the screen at the same time. I was amazed because I had tried VLC on my Alpha install and got nowhere. The version playing on the youtube was obviously pre Alpha but I would have thought if it played pre alpha then it would play on the alpha?
I know ( think is probably closer to the truth ), that my Nvidia driver isn't loaded because the screen scrolling on some sites isn't smooth.( not to be construde as a moan ). I have looked to see what drivers are installed but was unsuccessful.
Another question if I may, Bon Echo doesn't use Xmarks( old foxmarks ) does anyone know of a way to copy Firefox (W2k) bookmarks over to Haiku Bon Echo.( When I look at the W2k NTFS partition read/write Haiku refuses to work, I even tried emailing them but that didn't work either)
Any help as always appreciated.

playing music

Forum thread started by farvardin on Sat, 2009-09-19 22:12

I can play ogg vorbis or mp3 files with the MediaPlayer. But the sound is quite choppy and cracks quite much. I noticed if I disable a CPU (it's an amd64 dual core), it seems to sound a bit better. Yet if I do something on the system (right clicking on the ProcessController, clicking on a tab in Firefox/BeZilla), then the sound is even more degradated, as if my computer was not powerful enough to handle this. Is it normal in the current state of Haiku?

playing midi files

Forum thread started by farvardin on Sat, 2009-09-19 22:05

Hello,

I'm running Haiku on real hardware. I can't play midi files with the midi player. I can drop file on the app, nothing is running. My soundcard is a common integrated AC97 card.

Is the midi player supposed to work in this case?

trouble booting alpha 1

Forum thread started by Fuddyman on Sat, 2009-09-19 17:11

I installed alpha 1 on my old computer (1.4 Ghz p3, 80gb hard drive) and I'm pretty sure I installed it properly but when I attempt to boot it I get a screen that says Fatal: Error Loading OS

oh and another thing when I boot haiku off a CD, My monitor gives an error as well during the splash screen (it doesn't interfere with the boot process though), It tells me that It is out of sinc and I am unable to to anything until the desktop appears and the monitor error disappears, it is a CRT monitor

Pointer delay

Forum thread started by JeezS on Fri, 2009-09-18 22:05

In haiku on a macbook pro with most recent virtualbox the mouse/pointer delay is bad; I switch to opensolaris/vbox and no glitchiness, I am a n00b and i live in a t00b, but keen to give Haiku a good try-out. Any ideas? I got a vdi from myhaiku.de, because the iso wouldn't boot for me, stalling on a blank desktop after the haiku startup pic/icons.

Installing other software.

Forum thread started by dened50 on Fri, 2009-09-18 14:30

Hi, I have Haiku alpha installed to a HD and have tried installing a couple of other pieces of software. I was successful with Gobe, ( installed from an old BeOS cd ). I then tried Netsurf and although it installs normally and I can see it in the folder it doesn't boot. Says Missing libaries.
The only slight prob other than that was with BonEcho and that was a kind of freezing, which I cured by lengthening the DNS lookup time .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to install Haiku

Forum thread started by LinXG on Fri, 2009-09-18 00:05

I have downloaded the Alpha release (ISO) and I am trying to follow he installation instructions.

I am using what I believe is the latest release of GParted (gparted-live-0.4.6-1). There are 14 different ways I can format a hard drive but none of them seem to be BeOS?

GParted appears to be the recommended partitioning tool so what am I doing wrong?

The hard drive is empty and I assume that once it's format I can proceed to doing the install.

Thanks
Lin
