haiku on an msi s6000

Forum thread started by kg4cjv on Sat, 2014-03-29 15:57

Hi,

I'm new to haiku so I downloaded a copy of alpha 4 from the main page and installed it on a second partition on my laptop. Everything freezes when I try to do anything that "seems" i/o itensive. The cpu fan kicks on high and I'm unable to do anything. How can I troubleshoot this issue? Are there any log files that I can look at? Also, cpu stepping seems to not work. When I launch the application from the menu it shows my cpu at ?? mhz.

Thanks

What did I do wrong here? Do I need to make the folder manually?:

(I wanted to just paste a few lines here but the pointy brackets ruined the formatting and I don't know how to escape them. Also couldn't manage to get ShowImage or Wonderbrush to crop the image down.)

Using another window manager

Forum thread started by HaikuForever on Tue, 2014-03-18 15:45

Hi

I am interested in the possibility of using another window manager on Haiku.
Is there an easy way to do this? (I am particularly fond of Openbox)

Thanks

A good time to switch?

Forum thread started by MrAccident on Mon, 2014-03-10 14:14

Within a month - Windows XP destined to be eXPired. This can be a good opportunity to move to Haiku. I definitely don't want to learn a new OS and applications, only to switch soon enough.
I have the previous version installed; I think 3. I already checked it out; and it seems workable in most aspects. I can install the new version; and start trying to find all the applications I need. But do you think there are things that can be a problem to totally switch?
If I remember correctly - there were some problems with the file-system. Something was unreliable. Maybe with fragmentation, if most of the disk is full.
Anyway, how reliable is it today. Should I use it for files? And how well does Haiku work with NTFS now?
And if there are problems - are they supposed to be solved in the next version; that's coming out soon, if I understand correctly?

Is it possible to programmatically change Web+ settings?

Forum thread started by CyberneticianDave on Thu, 2014-03-06 10:56

I'm looking to build a script I can chuck in git and just clone/run every time I pick up a new nightly and set up some basics for me. One of the things I'd like to do is modify the Web+ settings to put Goodsearch as the search engine. I noticed the settings are stored in a binary file, though. Is there any way of modifying these programmatically? Otherwise I'll just have to take the whole blob and stick that in the repo, which is a little risky as the structure may change between versions. I suppose I just backup the existing settings before I overwrite...

Looks like I've solved it myself, lol, but if anyone does know a programmatic way to do it I'd be very grateful!

Help installing OpenJDK

Forum thread started by CyberneticianDave on Mon, 2014-03-03 09:35

I've been following Haiku for a little while, lurking at the edge. Recently it's been brilliant to see how usable and stable it is.

I got a nightly a few days ago and I've been trying to follow instructions to install OpenJDK such as https://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum/apps_i_use_haiku_openjdk or http://openstatic.org/haiku/. All the instructions I've found include copying/extracting the files to a location that is read only.

So, total noob question, how do I get OpenJDK installed and working? How do we get that into Haiku Depot to make life easier for other noobs?
