Short how-to: Installing the Haiku networking kit

Forum thread started by schlesi on Tue, 2004-10-05 19:34

Hi all,

today I've decided to install the Haiku networking kit on my machine and documented this short how-to. May be it could be useful for other BeOS rookies:

*** Note: Please be careful when using this how-to. Until now, I didn't find out how to install the networking-kit in a proper way. My how-to worked sometimes on my machine with Athlon XP and SIS-NIC-Chipset, but mostly it crashes at the "ifconfig". I've installed it on my other machine with Athlon-900 and 3Com-NIC, but there I was unable to get a network connection. May be someone other could explain how to install the kit in a proper way, the installation instructions in the package seems not to do it. ***

Network HW choices

Hello you there!

I plan to retire my old 10mbit network card and replace it with a 100mbit thingy. Does anyone have suggestions what to get that will most probably be supported by Haiku? I understand R1 may be some time off yet, but there's no reason not to plan for it today...

Hey folks, I'm an old-timer BeOS user who left the scene for a few years. I'm very interested in getting back into it, and I'm wondering what's the best way to install the system.

My plan is to put Haiku on a partition in a system that currently is running only Fedora Core 2, but the last I knew, you had to install BeOS 5 PE from Windows. I do also recall that there was a somewhat tricky method to install it to a partition without needing it to be within Windows, but I can't remember what that method is, nor how to go about it from Linux. I've searched around online but haven't dug up much that's of use so far.

Which Haiku components can be tested?

Hi,

I've downloaded the Haiku-distro from the Build-Factory and replaced all libs and servers from my BeOS Max installation with them. After that BeOS couldn't boot again ;-(

Which components of BeOS can be replaced by Haiku components without making the installation unbootable?

CVS=KDL

:( That's four times in a row now. The first time it went for an hour or so before it KDLed, but after that, running cvs sends me into KDL in short order. Ideas, anyone? I'm going to reformat my Haiku partition and try again...
