Help burning Haiku R1 Alpha 3 CD in OS X from Anyboot.Image

Forum thread started by macsociety on Mon, 2011-10-10 01:12

Have the Haiku R1Alpha3 Anyboot.Image but not sure how to burn it to CD. Haiku website shows use SimplyBurns but that does not want to mount or see the anyboot.image as valid. Tried OS X Disk Utility also but that does not like anyboot.image files.

Only way to make one is from ISO image and tried that but my new Zotac system that installed and runs R1 Alpha 2 fine does not want to install R1 Alpha 3. Starts install process after booting from CD, starts install on my one Be partition (that is all I have), and then a few minutes later all this text shows in the screen is it freezes.

In R1 Alpha 2 nothing like this happens.

So, something about R1 Alpha 3 has issues.

Trying to download the ISO again "just in case" and make a new ISO burn from OS X but if that fails, not sure what else to try. This time trying the newest nightly build instead of the stock R1 Alpha 3.

Problems booting to Haiku nightlies on usb-key

Forum thread started by paulfxh on Thu, 2011-10-06 23:00

I've used Haiku for more than three years on my EeePC901 netbook and never had any problems re-installing or upgrading the Haiku version from usb-key (no optical drive available).
Now I have Haiku R1A3 installed and working fine and I very much wanted to try out the newly ported wpa_supplicant which I understand is only available in nightlies from r42778 on.
However, in all of the recent nightlies that I've tried (r42778 to r42804), the usb-key boots only to a black screen.
I have tried many alternatives to correct this (two different usb keys, burnt the usb-key from Linux and from Haiku, downloaded anyboot.zip and anyboot.xz) but all gave the same result.
In addition, using the same keys on a Dell E520 desktop gave the same no-boot problem (boot only to black screen) until today when I tried out r42804.
Now the usb-key boots perfectly to the Haiku Desktop on my Dell E520 but still does not on the netbook.
I have also tried several fail-safe video modes on the netbook, but none proved successful.

Specifically, during the boot from usb-key with the most recent nightlies, although the seven icons appear on the bootsplash page, the word HAIKU is absent (although this didn't stop r42804 from booting on my Desktop).
Then, on the netbook, after the rocket icon turns red, the screen turns black with an ill-defined white interior that slowly fades to black, leaving the whole screen black.

Note that using the very same techniques, today as a check, I burnt R1A3 to one of the same usb-keys and found that this booted perfectly on the netbook (as it has done previously).

Has anybody any clue as to what might be happening here?

Wifi broadcom and wpa2 question

Forum thread started by franz1789 on Sat, 2011-10-01 11:47

Hi, I'm newbie in Haiku. I used to use GNU/Linux, but somehow it was getting further than what I was looking for. Anyway, I'd really like trying Haiku on hdd (as of now I only used vmware), but two questions stop me:
-Will I be able to use my broadcom 4312 wifi card?
-Will I be able to use it with a wpa2 encoded wireless?
I read that recently wpa_supplicant was added as a optionalpackage, so what if I download a nightly?

Problem getting network interface to work in install of haiku a r3 in vmware fusion 4 for macosx

Forum thread started by frankenburps on Sun, 2011-09-25 04:49

I downloaded initially the VM for r3 and that works fine. I can access the network. however the startup disk is quite small and can't be resized.

So, I downloaded the .iso installer image and make a new VMware instance, and installed haiku. However, now I can't get a network connection. In network control panel, no devices are listed. I have tried both in bridged modes and in NAT modes, sharing mac connection. Rebooted after each change for good measure.

However with listdev, I do see that the network controller is being detected.

It says

device Network controller (Ethernet controller) [2|0|0]
vendor 1022: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
device 2000: 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE]

however, nothing ever shows up in network control panel and i cant browse the web.

Interestingly when I first tried to copy the results of listdev, the terminal froze. I had to force-kill it. Then on rebooting haiku, haiku froze entirely mid-startup. A bit spooky interms of instability... no big deal as I had just installed and just did a reinstall to fix it, but hopefully it will be more stable on an ongoing basis.

Thanks for any advice-

Frank

A bit confused about where to install new applications

Forum thread started by enzo on Fri, 2011-09-16 12:58

Hi,

I read Haiku User Guide, but still I don't understand at which place I should put an application,
binaries, additional files. Is a good place the /boot/apps directory? I mean to unzip a package
in this directory. Are there other common locations? Recently I downloaded sources for
the sane program - now I have no idea is there a particular location for sources?

Of course I can experiment but this will mess my present installation. Tell me what you
are doing routinely. At this moment I will simply follow your advices.
